Hi everyone,
I'm very new to Joplin and considering using it for journaling. I have a few questions and would appreciate any guidance.
- Is Joplin suitable for journal writing? Are there any features or plugins that enhance the experience?
- Here’s what I’ve done so far:
- Downloaded the Windows application
- Set up synchronization with OneDrive
- Enabled encryption with a Master Key
- Exported my journals from Notesnook in TXT format and imported them into Joplin
- Installed the Android app, synced with OneDrive, and added my master key for decryption
- My main goal is to use Joplin daily for journaling. I will be writing in Devanagari script. Does Joplin handle it well in terms of font rendering and search functionality?
- I want to ensure that even if I lose all my devices or uninstall Joplin from all of my existing devices, I can install Joplin on a new device, sync with OneDrive, and regain access to all my journals. Would this setup work reliably for that purpose?
Looking forward to your insights. Thanks in advance!
Welcome to Joplin @Zasoos!
To your first question: There already is a plugin for supporting journaling. Just give it a try, I have no experience with it. There is another thread here. And perhaps you’re also looking for using a template? There is a plugin as well for templates as far as I remember.
To your last question: Yes, as long as nobody kills your database using one of your lost devices, and as long as you stay synchronising your notes with your OneDrive, you should be safe.

I use the template plugin for journaling as it allows me to have the title created automatically, complete with date and time.
---
template_title:{{datetime}} - TITLE
template_notebook:92bcc7fe077b45ffadc90e1b088d66aa
---
Title is whatever you like to start the entry. I just use the string "TITLE" as a placeholder. I end up with something like
2025-03-30 09:31 - TITLE
You can get the "template_notebook" value by right-clicking the notebook and selecting "Copy notebook ID".
Something you should remember though, is that while your entries will be encrypted on OneDrive, they are not encrypted on your local system. Somebody with access to your computer will have instant access to your journal while it may take MS a few minutes to decrypt the entries on OneDrive.
