This doesn't solve your issue exactly, but a few things to note in case you hadn't come across:

  1. You can switch what the layout button toggles through in View > Layout Button Sequence. This is helpful if you never use one of the views
  2. You can use Command-L (might be different on your machine, and you can remap) to quickly toggle between without a button
  3. There's a plugin that lets you choose which layout on a per note basis. Useful if you find yourself switching based on the note. Persist Editor Layout Plugin
