How to fix synchronisation issues

If your app is not synchronising properly or something got corrupted and you want to start over, follow this guide.

First, make a backup

In all cases, the most reliable way to fix synchronisation is to start from a recent JEX backup of your notes. Having such backup also ensure you don't lose anything while you're trying to fix synchronisation.

If one of your applications is in a good state and has all the data, you can create this JEX backup file from File => Export all => JEX

Otherwise, you may be able to get this backup file from the JoplinBackup folder in your home directory. This would have been created by the Backup Plugin, which is enabled by default.

To start over with Joplin Cloud or Joplin Server

  • From the desktop app:
  • Synchronise your data until the sync process stops (check the sidebar)
  • Install the Victor Plugin
  • Follow the plugin instructions to delete all your notes
  • Synchronise again, and wait for sync to be completed
  • Import your JEX file
  • Synchronise

To start over with other sync targets

For Nextcloud, Dropbox, OneDrive, etc.

  • Delete all the data on the sync target
  • From the desktop app, create a new profile
  • Import your JEX backup file
  • Synchronise your notes

Fixing your other devices

Once you've applied the above steps the sync target should be in a good state, and the desktop app too. If other devices are synchronising with this sync target, follow these instructions:

Desktop

  • Create a new profile
  • Synchronise your notes with this new profile

This ensures that the old sync state doesn't end up corrupting the sync target again

Mobile

  • Delete the app
  • Reinstall it
  • Synchronise
