'Add tags' dropdown should auto open

at the bottom of main window is the option to add a tag. clicking on it opens a window with a drop down box, requiring a click to show available tags. Is there a reason I might open the 'add a tag' window and not want to see available tags?

It makes sense that the add tags window would show available tags by default, and not require another click to make that happen.

It depends... LOL

If you want to see all the tags you have to go on the notebook column... Click on "tags".

First click:

Second click:

OK. I'm not sure to understand the problem you encounter.

The workflow... You are supposed to start to write your tag and to look at the list of tags that will autocomplete, caracter by caracter.

If you want you can choose directly an already existing tag.

If the tag doesn't exist, you can create it at the bottom of the list.

Don't forget "OK".

Anyway : you should look here:

And elsewhere using the search function:

I don't describe it as a problem. It is about efficiency. What you are showing as "second click" is what is unnecessary. The tag window should simply open with existing tags shown. The "second click" could simply be to click on the desired tag. Simple.

With 10 tags maybe but with 653 like me ? You will never have your "desired tag" in the list. Mouse is useless, keyboard is everything. I not sure of the interest to have "some" tags since the begining (first click) because they are without interest (not related to your need). By my point of view (only) to have a clean window at first click is cool because you can write immediately your word without being disturbed by non desired tags.

What is the opinion of others ?

Recalling previous conversations on this forum there are people that have a very large number of tags. Like yourself, they have more tags than a single dialog could display. I believe that your "second-click" method shows a list of all tags but only if when user wants it rather than every user being presented with a huge list by default and having to scroll and hunt to find what they want. Actually I find the method of typing a few letters and selecting from the subset displayed the more efficient method of adding tags.

I didn't mean that having existing tags auto display would preclude typing in the box to retrieve or a create a new tag.
Personally, I have not been 'disturbed' by options appearing in a drop down box, even if I didn't want one of them. But I found it to be handy when I did want one. I generally don't have more than a few tags.
I guess that we could be looking at an 'option': to have, or not have, existing tags offered when opening the tags box.
Keep everyone happy.

yes

If there is just a few tags like for you it is obviously interesting to have the short list immediately visible in order to use the mouse because there's no tag to search ! For other people like me with many tags there's no meaning to have some tags at first click among thousands.
ANYWAY...
Better than just an option on/off, I think it could be usefull for EVERYONE to have access (at first click like you want) to a small list of the 10 (or more) preferred tags... We can even imagine to be able to create many personal lists of preferred tags and give a name to each of them. Somewhere we could do the choice (according to his name) of a list (of preferred tags) among others in order to improve the workflow. Like this, according to the activity, there's a different short list of preferred tags immediately accessible by mouse.
What do you think ?

sounds like a good idea to me. I can have my short list available, and those with long lists can have which ever selection that they like available.
