Newbie: three panes?

What issue do you have?

New to Joplin, refugee from Evernote. What's the deal with the third pane all the way to the right? It has an option to pin the note. But the middle pane shows the content of the note. What is the purpose of the third pane, and can I get rid of it?

It looks like you have installed the Note Tabs plugin. This defaults to showing in a pane on the right but if you change the app layout (using View > Change application layout) you can set the tabs to appear across the top.
