I am using Joplin (production versions only) on two osx desktop devices. Joplin on the first device, a few days ago, claimed there was an update (v2.9.1) which I downloaded and installed from within Joplin. All went normal. The 2nd one, still today, claims that the version 2.8.8. is the latest one and that all is up to date. How can this be ? Is this some malware which is pulling me by the nose ?
2.9.1 is a pre-release (i.e. beta) and 2.8.8 is the latest "full" release.
Do you have "Get pre-releases when checking for updates" enabled on one client and not the other? (in Settings > Application).
