Can't Type Smart Quotes

Joplin 2.9.17 (prod, darwin), MacOS 10.14.6

Using the Markdown Editor, nothing I have tried has resulted in my being able to type either single or double smart quotes.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Enable Typographer in Markdown Preferences
  2. In any note (in MD Editor), type shift-" or '
  3. Result is straight quotes, not smart (curly) quotes

When I went through the above steps in Joplin on my iPad (iOS 14), I got curly quotes as desired. But on my Macbook Pro (2011, 17") I continue to get straight quotes. I've been using Joplin on this computer for over two years now, and it has never once produced a smart quote.

Any ideas on what could possibly be causing this would be greatly appreciated.
