BUG => GITHUB - Drag-and-Drop URL Issue After Upgrading to Joplin 3.3.9 (MD Link Format Changed)

Operating system

Windows

Joplin version

3.3.9

Editor

Rich Text Editor

What issue do you have?

I’ve encountered an issue with Joplin after upgrading from version 3.2.13 to 3.3.9, and I’d like to know if others have experienced the same or if there’s a known fix.

Problem Description: In version 3.2.13, when I drag-and-drop a URL from a browser (I'm using Brave) into a Joplin note in the rich text editor, it correctly formats the link as [page title](URL) in the markdown syntax, where the page title is fetched automatically, and the URL is embedded in the Markdown code. For example, dragging the URL of this forum into the rich text editor would create, in the markdown code:

[Joplin Forum](https://discourse.joplinapp.org/)

After upgrading to 3.3.9, the same action only pastes the raw URL in the rich text note and in the markdown code, without fetching the page title or formatting it as a Markdown link. This breaks my workflow, as I rely on the formatted links for quick organization.

Details:

  • Joplin Version: 3.3.x (issue not present in 3.2.13)

  • Platform: Windows 10

  • Browser: Brave 1.78.94

  • Steps to Reproduce:

    1. Open Joplin 3.3.x and create a new note.
    2. Drag a URL from the browser address bar into the rich text editor.
    3. Observe that only the raw URL is pasted in both the MD editor and the rich text editor.
  • Workaround: I’ve downgraded to 3.2.13, which restores the previous behavior, but I’d prefer to use the latest version.

Hello LibroNero, Welcome to the forum.

By my side (Firefox, Joplin 3.3.12, Linux) I have this situation under linux:

And under windows 11 (Joplin 3.3.12, Firefox 138.0.1) :

I mean : I drag and drop from firefox to joplin and nothing happen: no wrong paste, no error message !!!

From FIREFOX to JOPLIN, MD editor directly: too much things !!!

From CHROME to JOPLIN, RTE editor:
Nothing !!!

From CHROME to JOPLIN, MD Editor:

Hi Steph, thanks for the reply. It looks like the last version where dragging and dropping a URL worked was 3.2.13, both the installed and portable one. I find it to be extremely convenient and fast, so I think I'll stick with that version until the problem is fixed.

Just in case:

  1. use the latest version of BRAVE (1.78.97). Il will test with it soon (France)
  2. try to use [CTRL] or [SHIFT] or [ALT] or combination while you are drag and droping...

Hi Steph, I tried with the latest versions of Chrome and Joplin (on windows 10) and with all the possible key combinations, but without luck.

Impossible to install BRAVE on my linux now... Sorry.
Anyway I think we should alert about the issue on github (support). Do you want me to do that ?

Yes please. i would really appreciate it

Done !

Thank you, merci, grazie

With the last version of JOPLIN something was done about this issue.

But I don't know if only Firefox is concerned. Have you try with Brave ?

Hi Steph, sorry for the delay in replying. Unfortunately the issue remains unsolved for the Brave browser. Drag and drop of a URL address still yields the same result as before:

Brave 1.79.119; Joplin 3.3.12; Windows 10

Thank you for checking!

Be aware that the related change currently requires the Joplin v3.4.1 pre-release:

Henri is true...

Thanks to both of you. After your clarification I installed the pre-release 3.4.1. Unfortunately, Joplin's behavior is still the same with Brave. It seems that the problem of dragging and dropping a URL from this browser is not yet fixed.
Thanks for your work on this very useful software.

OK, I will ask again with this Browser in some days. I have to install it first...
