Banner: Press to set the encryption key

Operating system

Android

Joplin version

3.4.7

What issue do you have?

I set up WebDav sync to my own server. It works great. The problem is that as soon as I turned on syncing, an annoying orange banner appeared "Press to set the encryption key". I don't want to use encryption. For the sake of making the banner go away I tried to enable encryption and set a master password. No matter what I do I can't set the password.

What I'm really asking is: how do I make the banner go away without enabling encryption? If encryption is required than how do I get it to accept a master password?

I did not have this problem on the phone I just migrated off of.

I was using Motorola Edge+ 2023 Android 14. Now I'm on OnePlus 13 Android 16. I have already tried with a blank slate, no notes, without importing my previous notes/config. Same problem.

No, it’s not mandatory to enable encryption, and that banner should not appear if you have never enabled encryption on any device which has used / is using that profile. Maybe something went wrong with your profile, in which case, you should try starting over as detailed in this thread How to fix synchronisation issues and start over

Hi, thanks for responding. I've tried starting over several times. I've even force stopped the app, cleared all app data and started from scratch without even importing any config/notes. Unencrypted syncing works fine, I just can't get the decryption banner/notice to go away. It's on every screen/notebook

Just to clarify, did startting over include wiping the server data, or at least changing Joplin to use a different path on it?

Yes starting over included server data.

This is my first time migrating my joplin to another device. I was actually forced to delete server data because the first time I restored my joplin backup to the device and then I synchronized with the server. It made duplicate notes when synchronization was complete.

I did not change the path on the server. I deleted all the contents of the folder from the server. Maybe that's what I should try next.

Maybe try deleting the parent folder which the sync is pointing to, not the just the contents. There are some hidden folders which may or may not show up by default, depending on how you are accessing the server

I'm using Yandex’s WebDav, I didn't want to delete or create a new directory. I'd have to generate a new password and it's a hassle. What I did was create a new subdirectory and had it sync there. However I don't believe any of this was actually necessary.

The other thing I did which I believe is the sole solution is:

Fresh install Joplin (clear app data would probably work too). Before importing my config I setup encryption first. This time it accepted the master password and encryption password. I then disabled Encryption, setup synchronization and imported all my notes. Everything works, no more annoying banner. Thanks for your help buddy. :folded_hands:t4: I appreciate it.
