Backing up phone doesn't back up Joplin data?

Operating system

Android

Joplin version

3.2.7

What issue do you have?

Silly old me assumed locally backing up my phone would back up data on my phone (massive blunder, of course), but apparently Joplin is entirely exlcuded from backups, despite the data being physically stored on the phone, so all I got after restoring from my backup were the useless welcome notes, which I assume came from just installing the app from among the list of previously installed apps.
Why?

You weren't syncing your Joplin data or had a backup made?

As some users may have gigabytes of Joplin data, the size is likely too big to fit within Android or IOS backup mechanisms. Most mobile users probably sync, so a new phone is just a sync session away.

Most backup programs can't backup app data on Android due to its sandboxing. There are apps that can backup said data but they require root or ADB (Android Debug Bridge).

The former option can void warranties and may cause issues with Banking, Store, Insurance, and Healthcare apps These types of apps tend to detect rooting as a security threat which isn't at all invalid since it can allow other apps both malicious (keyloggers, ransomware, ECT) and benign (backup apps) to access otherwise secure/sensitive data. There are methods to fool these apps but they aren't guaranteed to work and you have to trust that the authors haven't snuck in some malicious code of their own.

The latter option can be very confusing even to a somewhat tech savvy user and generally requires connecting to a PC though you'd probably do that anyway to make a backup. I've heard of some apps that are supposed to make things easier by using a fake ADB connection right from the phone and having some common options. I unfortunately don't remember the names of any of those apps. Most searches tend to suggest using Shizoku for these types of things but I that can be a real pain in the rear.

P. S. On that last note one thing that kills me when setting up a new phone (which isn't too often thankfully) is that most instructions for installing Ice Box (allows you to freeze apps so they act like they are uninstalled but can be unfrozen at any time without needing a network connection) tell you the only options are too either root your phone or use Shizuko. There's actually another much better (imo) option which is to make Ice Box the device Admin. You only have to use ADB once and the initial setup does require temporarily removing all accounts from the device but after that it just works without needing to fiddle around with other apps and frequently giving it the necessary permissions which are periodically lost (in my experience multiple times a day).

Hi,

If your only using Joplin on a phone and no where else, you need to do the following.

Yes, you can back up Joplin data on an Android phone! Here's how you can do it:

Open Joplin: Launch the Joplin app on your Android device.

Export Notes: Go to Joplin Configuration > Import and Export > Export all notes as JEX.

Save the File: When prompted, choose where to save the backup file. You can save it to your device's storage or share it directly with a cloud service like Google Drive or an email app1.

Locate the File: The exported file (usually named jex-export.jex) will be saved in the location you chose. You can use a file manager app to find it if needed1.

By following these steps, you'll have a backup of your Joplin data that you can restore later if needed.

NEXT:

You need to back up that file to some other device or cloud storage.

I just switched (Samsung) phones, and Samsung's "Smart Switch" also didn't copy the Joplin data. It did work for copying the state of a few other apps though (e.g. PodcastAddict, of fuelio).

Hi,

I'm also a Samsung phone user And Use Smart Switch when I switch phones And it will not move Joplin data For you You need to follow the instructions I put in the previous post To do a backup of the data using the Joplin software And then take that back up and put it on your new phone And import it.

Personally, I synchronize my data from my phone to my Microsoft OneDrive account so when I switch phones I don't need to do anything it just sinks down to the phone the new one.

If the only place your Joplin data exists is on your cell phone you must do a backup move the data and then import it.
