2025-02-12 - Joplin 3.2.12 update does not survive a restart

Operating system

Windows

Joplin version

3.2.12

Sync target

Nextcloud

What issue do you have?

On one of my Windows 11 machines, the update from version 3.1.24 to 3.2.12 disappears when I restart Joplin.
I don't have this problem on my other Windows 11 machines.

What I did several times:
a) Noted the reference to the new version 3.2.12 when starting Joplin
b) downloaded the new version
c) closed Joplin 3.1.24
d) installed the Joplin 3.2.12 update
e) checked version 3.2.12 in ‘About Joplin’
f) restarted Joplin or the entire computer
g) received a message about the new version 3.2.12 again when starting Joplin

Is the Windows 11 machine using a single-user, or full-system install?

  • If a single-user installation, Joplin should launch from C:\Users\...\AppData\Local\Programs\Joplin.exe. This path should be visible in the properties dialog for the Joplin shortcut.

    Opening the properties dialog
    1. Right-click on the shortcut used to launch the app
    2. Click "properties".

If Joplin is launched from the start menu, it may be necessary to first click "open file location":

Be sure that you're updating the full system installation of Joplin. It's possible that there are two versions of Joplin installed — a per-user and a full-system installation. If this is the case, the updater may only be updating one of the two, and perhaps not the copy that's being launched after a restart.

Edited: Re-worded.

Thank you.

I unknowingly performed a full-system installation on this machine. But as with all other machines, I also performed a single-user upgrade on it. So that was the problem.

After I performed the update as a full-system install, I no longer get the message.

Should I somehow clean up this duplicate installation?

To prevent future confusion, cleaning up the duplicate installation may make sense. To do this:

  1. Make a backup copy of C:\Users\YourUserName\.config\joplin-desktop.

    • This folder includes Joplin's settings, database, plugins, and profile data. Although it should not be removed by the uninstallation process, it's good to have a backup  .
  2. Go to system settings > apps > installed apps:

  3. Search for Joplin.

  4. Click the "..." button.

  5. Click "uninstall":

  6. Reinstall Joplin 3.2.12 using the Joplin installer.

  7. Launch Joplin.

  8. (Optional) Remove the backup made in step 1.
