I see what you mean, but I'd rather add a feature properly than to "just add an option", and having to maintain that permanently afterwards even if it was the wrong approach. Maybe it's the right approach actually, who knows, but I'd rather not rush to it.
A remarkably candid response I cannot see why there is so much caution here but I am not a code guru!!
In the meantime I will continue to neuter non-links and unwanted links. At the moment I suppose it is easier for those of us that have always had to neuter links to continue to do so, rather than for those who have not to have to go back and add < ... >
to every note with plain-text linkified links in it.

I just received a notification that one of my links above had been classed as "popular" which suggests that people are still referencing this thread.
Just for clarity, since this thread was created Joplin has been updated and the ability to automatically make a URL a link, or not, is a program setting. It's called Linkify and can be found under Tools > Options > Markdown.
