Trying to fix Renderer process gone

What issue do you have?

I have been getting "Renderer process gone" error for months and finally want to get it resolved. I can still use Joplin desktop, but only in Safe mode.

When I disable Safe mode and restart, the desktop app crashes within a few minutes. It looks like a memory issue as reported in other posts (e.g. An error occurred: Renderer process gone), however I do not have OCR enabled and never had. I do have e2e encryption enabled. I'm getting the "Paused before potential memory-crash" message in debugger. I imported 1000's of notes from Evernote last year when I became a paying Joplin user, and have since created probably a thousand or more new notes in Joplin, mostly in the iPhone iOS app (the vast majority complete HTML web pages from news sources).
I suspect I have some extra extra large attachments imported from Evernote that are creating havoc. My question is: how do I find and eliminate large attachments in Joplin, in other words how do I find the culprit?
Thanks in advance for any help.

The backup plugin periodically creates JEX exports of all note and attachment data. Does disabling the backup plugin (or turning off automatic backups) help?

Wow! Could this seriously be the culprit ? I disabled Backup plugin, restarted, and then restarted again to disable Safe mode.
Result: Joplin has been open for ~10 minutes without crashing and I see rendered notes !
No more "Renderer process gone" or "Paused before potential memory-crash".

I'm stunned, flabbergasted, and cautiously jubilant !! I hope this solution persists after I switch back from sync target OneDrive to Joplin Cloud.

One question I have: what does Backup do that sync does not? Isn't sync already a form of backup (either in Joplin Cloud, Onedrive, Dropbox, etc)?

Thank you sooo much for your valuable contribution and super fast response.

Daniel

Sync is not backup. For example, if you accidently delete or modify a file, the change then gets synced to all devices. On the hand, backup is set in stone, i.e. once saved on the disk, the content doesn't change regardless of your future modifications.

Makes complete sense. I should have given it some more thought. Thanks a lot for explaining. What a great community here. I love Joplin much more now that my issue is fixed.
