Rough Method to Include Spreadsheets in Joplin

yeah I know about it but it still is a plugin, which means not great "graphical" integration, no smartphone usability and less exposition to the general public

A VAST amount of Joplin's functionality comes from community made plugins, deciding not to use a feature because it's not built in is kinda shooting yourself in the foot no? I just checked and I have 27 plugins running on my version, asking the devs to maintain all of those alongside core joplin would be ridiculous and would result in most or all of them falling by the wayside...

I agree that JSheets' graphical implementation is lacking but that's an issue you can take up with the plugin author and ask them to work on, to that point the person who made the bundle plugin responded to my message asking them about theme compatibility and they made an update in less than a week iirc

The only reason I can agree with for staying away from plugins would be the mobile usage but surely this is less reasonable if you're talking about a spreadsheet plugin, what kind of smartphone are you using that makes handling your finances on the go feasible...?

Imho plugins are a good solution for niche functionalities. Spreadsheets in a note app to me is a core functionality. Also I was not talking about me specifically, I was talking about how I think that providing spreadsheet functionalities would boost Joplin popularity among average users, average users more often than not want a clean interface and dont care about plugins.

For me personally the biggest turn down about plugins is the smartphone compatibility. I use Joplin as a notebook and being able to access all of my notes everywhere (aka cross platform) is fundamental. More often than not I just need to check the notes for reminders, I wouldnt necessarily need to edit the spreadsheets but that would be nice (even if clunky) if needed.

I hear the souls of a thousand IT professionals dying in pain

What exactly do you mean by "spreadsheets" in this instance? Just interactive tables or are we talking actual spreadsheets with cell calculations, formulae etc. etc. What is the limit of the functionality here?

interactive tables for sure and as I said basic calculations and formulae like arithmetic and ifs

I tried JSheet and I am currently using it.

Functionality-wise it is good (for my necessities), but it is too slow, even with small files.
I observed that it becomes unusably slow if the markdown mode is open, this makes me think that maybe it is the markdown nature of joplin to impede a well-functioning spreadsheet mode.

Also I noticed some bugs that occur in the Joplin interface when the JSheets screen is resized.

I agree about the smartphone compatibility issue for plugins. I use the JSheets plugin on desktop and it works well, but not being able to access those spreadsheets from the phone app is really unfortunate. I would also love to have some basic Excel-type functionality like equations and being able to use different columns for sorting. I would love to see an integrated spreadsheet feature in Joplin at some point.
