Joplin crashes when I start after upgrading to Linux Mint 22
Hi,
If Joplin was installed using the .AppImage
, see No more launching appImage applications at startup after update 24.04 - #2 by personalizedrefriger for workarounds and related discussion.
Linux Mint 22 should be based on Ubuntu 24.04 (according to its release notes). As such, the information specific to Ubuntu 24.04 included in the discussion may also apply to Linux Mint 22.
Yes, Mint 22 is based on Ubuntu 24.04 so there should be similar issues.
What are the alternatives to appImage on Ubuntu 24.04? Can I do an alternative install and just sync all my notes to the new install?
I did install it as a Flatpak if that makes any differance?
There are a few community-maintained alternatives to the AppImage on Ubuntu 24.04:
Can I do an alternative install and just sync all my notes to the new install?
Yes — this should work (though create a backup first, if possible!). The AppImage, Snap, and Flatpak packages should all store data in different places.
It might. However, I don't see any similar recent issues in the Flatpak's issue list.
I tried to reinstall Jopling using:
wget -O - https://raw.githubusercontent.com/laurent22/joplin/dev/Joplin_install_and_update.sh | bash
Sad to say but I get the same error as with the Flatpak version. I can run i safe mode but i normal mode I get a unresponsive window error.
Is it the same for others using Ubuntu 24.04 or Mint 22?
Safe mode should do two things: 1) disable all plugins, 2) switch to a minimal editor.
As such, the following steps might help:
Alternatively, could the issue be caused by a particular note?
I've just installed Linux Mint 22 in Virtualbox, then installed Joplin using the installation script (Joplin_install_and_update.sh
). So far, it seems to work.

Thank you... that did the trick. I could locate the problem to:
macOS theme v1.5.7
With that theme disabled all works fine!
A big thank you! Regards Bengt!
