The easiest free options are OneDrive and Dropbox
Personally I use the s3 sync with Cloudflare R2 which has a generous free tier, but is a bit more involved to setup
+1 for s3 sync, I do sync with this option too
From the Joplin web-site section on Synchronisation:
Currently, synchronisation is possible with Joplin Cloud, Nextcloud, S3, WebDAV, Dropbox, OneDrive or the local filesystem.
What this does not mention is that you can also set up a personal version of Joplin Cloud called Joplin Server using Docker on your own hardware / VPS. It is free for personal non-commercial use (it's not FOSS), but you will need a bit of knowledge about using Docker, reverse proxies and TLS certificate management. It is not the easiest free option but it is an option.
I had great results with the free Dropbox option. No issues at all. I synced my computer, tablet, and phone. Switched to paid to support the project. Now I frequently use the “Publish” function when I want to share what I’m writing with someone.
Yes. My initial months with Joplin were involved with using SyncThing and Joplin’s FIle System sync. Each Joplin would file system sync to a different location, and SyncThing would keep each of those locations in sync.
Cons: at least two of your devices have to be online and sync’d before you start a sesson; you probably want to force a sync in Joplin before a session and when complete; each device needs about 2x of your content storage to pull this off.
My email provider Fastmail offers some file storage and has webdav set up. I moved my Joplin data there. I still sync before I start and when I end a session.
It’s possible to get a small free NextCloud account from some ISPs and webdav to that file storage.
Hi
Thank you, I realy appreciate your help
I use Dropbox – two laptops, one phone, all done with encrypted notes.
I am using dropbox, on free plan. I don’t have a huge note collection, yet, so the free plan is adequate for me. easy to set up. Tell joplin that dropbox is the target (you need to setup an account at dropbox first). change whatever settings you desire, then click sync. Joplin will tell you to enter the code that will appear in a dropbox window. . 3 windows computers and iphone. not had any problems.
Before dropbox I was using nextcloud, until i traveled and found sync failing. something about nextcloud changing login.
