I can't speak for anyone else of course, but I believe that the point is being made that you shouldn't make decisions on what Joplin might add in the future. If Joplin doesn't currently offer a vital feature that you need and absolutely can't live without, then you probably shouldn't put all your eggs in one basket... YET.
On the other hand, I have found that the devs here are bending over backwards to answer questions and accommodate wishes. It is constantly being improved... I moved across from Evernote almost exactly one year ago and I just can't believe the additions since then.
But again, that is no guarantee that everything that Evernote offers will be implemented one on one... mind you we can always learn coding and change Joplin to suit our needs
Note history, (dark) themes, note count, math equations, export to markdown/html/PDF, sidebar column resizing, full text search, external editor support, web clipper... as well as a WYSIWYG editor (still in beta). And soon apparently inline PDF files will be added too (long term wish of mine).
All in the past 365-ish days! And it doesn't look like it's slowing down any time soon
Very impressive! Might I suggest someone could add this to the https://joplinapp.org/ homepage to let potential new users know about the constant improvements and the accommodating devs who have a commitment to ongoing improvements? What do you think?
I also think it might be useful for people to know upfront that there are a few limitations in current version of Joplin, such as, it cannot search the content of PDFs, and users cannot send email to their Joplin inbox. Perhaps someone could even do a comparison with Evernote table? (Just an idea).
Also, it was great to learn about the drag and drop feature:-
It could be very helpful if these tips were added to the documentation somewhere.
Going back the original question. If you still want to use Joplin, you could take the hotfolder script as someone here has already suggested and modify it to extract text from pdf and store it in Joplin alongside the file. Then you can use Joplins text search capabilities.
Yes, I now understand your remark that Joplin isn't a content management system for two major reasons:
Attachments are not searchable
meaningful filenames of the attachments are renamed to cryptic GUID, even in the export format
I understand the need for a GUIDs, but I would prefer to keep the original filename and append the GUID, at least for the export format.
Jana, they have something similar in their changelog: https://joplinapp.org/changelog/ - I agree with you that they could consider highlighting the really major additions such as when they added the web clipper, WYSIWYG editor etc.
I don't think there is a lot of usage or feature documentation... to some degree I think Joplin is still a little too young for that, and too much in development still. Also as you probably know it's an open source product with no hired staff, so good luck in getting coders to document their stuff - at least I have never seen a coder do so voluntarily So I agree with @Daeraxa that the best way currently is just to play with the program and ask/suggest about features in this forum.
... for now. I wouldn't be at all surprised if a plug-in was created by someone. It has come up quite a bit in this forum and so far, no one has said it wouldn't be feasible. It just needs someone willing/able to write it
I had a look through the readme and based on comments I've seen in this forum recently and some of my own experiences where things aren't immediately obvious, I've made a couple of small updates to the readme for consideration. I've not made it as a PR but here is a link to the comparison to the current readme - https://github.com/laurent22/joplin/compare/dev...Daeraxa:readme-update-1514
Interested to hear any thoughts, either yay or nay in regards to it.
Changes are as follows:
Added items to 'features' section
Added HTML import info to 'Importing > Importing from Evernote'
Added additional detail to 'Importing > Importing from Markdown files'
Added details of other export format options to 'Exporting'
Updated 'Synchronisation' with WebDAV + extra info about sync intervals + background syncing on content change
Added reference to inline display of items in 'Attachments'
Added file path for 'Note templates' section for those who might not be familiar with the config directory
Added 'plugins' section with short guide on how to install, turn off/on plugins, where they can be found and potential danger of installing them. As this is still beta functionality I understand if this section should not exist until it is out of beta.
