What issue do you have?

Migrated my notes over to try joplin out, unfortunately I don't seem to be able to change any tags. Clicking "Click to add tags" at the bottom of a note does nothing. Right clicking a note and selecting tags does nothing. Selecting "Note" from the menu bar and clicking tags also doesn't nothing. Clicking tags in the left hand sidebar does nothing.

Just tried out the web clipper extension. Adding a tag that way works and I can now see the tag in Joplin, but still unable to interact with tags in joplin itself

@ItMeCorban welcome to the forum.

It is. The Help > About dialog box has a button at the bottom marked "Copy" which copies all the client info displayed.

I am using Joplin on Linux (Debian-KDE & Kubuntu). All tag functions work (the tag dialog box appears) and I personally cannot reproduce your problem.

It may help one of the devs to know what actual OS / distro you are using and whether you installed Joplin using the official script (AppImage) or deb file or using an unofficial package (Snap, Flatpak, RPM, etc.).

Yes it is, my bad, just in case I got it wrong:

I’m running Arch with KDE. I just searched for Joplin in the Discover software center and installed it, guessing it’s a flatpak as that’s the standard these days

You could download the AppImage, run that and see if the tag system works? This is more to see if it is Joplin itself or just the package that you are using.

From personal experience and from what I have seen on this forum, Joplin (or possibly the Electron framework used to build it) may be having problems with certain Linux / KDE combinations. In seems that for some users Joplin will not open at all. For me it runs fine but I cannot export the data or copy files attached to any of my notes. The save dialog appears but it doesn't work. I did not notice when this started but it currently affects both my KDE Plasma 6.3.6 and 5.27.12 installations.

I do not have the knowledge to start to figure out what may be the cause of these problems but I intend to experiment with a few Linux / KDE combinations as well as continue looking around for a Joplin alternative.

The copy/paste/saving files sounds similar to issues I’ve had with flatpaks before, specifically discord and MS teams. Usually the issue is to do with Wayland portal access but as I understood it that was specific to flatpaks due to their sandboxed permissions. Appimages as far as I’m aware don’t have that level of access control so I can’t think what would be stopping it from accessing stuff on the rest of the system.

Are you able to open/import data? The first thing I did after install was tell it to import everything from my old logseq/obsidian folder and it worked great, though I haven’t tried exporting anything yet

Edit: just tried to export a file as MD and it worked as i expected, so does copy/paste.

Seems there are definitely some bugs that need ironing out overall, but overall the functionality seems to be there.

I may give the appimage a try but tbh I probably won’t use tags all that much so unless i find another reason to I’m probably just going to stick to the flatpak.

If any devs are reading it’d be cool to see official flatpak support if the one I’m using isn’t, since like I mentioned flatpaks seem to be becoming the standard for desktop applications with out of the box support on a lot of distros, and even coming as standard on some hardware (steam deck/steam machine) small user bases for Joplin I’m sure but having had minimal success with AppImages compared to flatpaks, I think it would be worth it

Sorry, I was a bit too general with my description. I can import and I can export as MD or HTML and the file picker works and files are saved. I cannot however export as JEX (a tarball). The dialog appears and "appears" to work but nothing is saved. Oddly enough the backup plugin can export as a JEX file but I guess it is using a different method. As for the file save dialogs, I cannot find anything of note in the logs. I select the location, name the file, press save and nothing happens, not even an error, this is both Wayland and X11. This never used to happen but the way I use Joplin means that this has not been too much of a problem. It is just that over time it starts to grate a bit.

Ah okay understood, exporting as JEX does seem to work for me though

I'm linking to this upstream Electron issue that might be related. Note that Joplin 3.5.11 uses a newer Electron version. Since the upstream issue has been closed as resolved, the newer Joplin+Electron version might help!

Thanks for the suggestion but I have already tried that and it still does not work. However I did try v3.5.11 with the latest dev release of Kubuntu 26.04 and all appears to work again. Let's hope that Electron / KDE / Debian don't break it all again by April.
