Black squares appearing - can I fix this?

What issue do you have?

why is joplin so glitchy? i just got it yesterday.. black squares randomly appearing over text and if i scroll the squares go with the words

Sometimes there's a white box covering some text on the line below my cursor that flashes opposite of my cursor. Like if the cursor is visible the white box is not, if the cursor is not visible the white box is.

I can't get a picture of the black dots now but they are far more annoying since they permanently obscure text

Please try changing the default font in the Joplin settings. If that doesn't help, then the problem may be related to hardware acceleration. You may try switching it off with --disable-gpu (which is a switch that you need to pass to Joplin from the command line on start).
