Autocomplete tag not user friendly

version 2.9.17
Kubuntu 22.04

So I switched to Joplin from using Google docs because of the tag functionality, but I'm not too happy with the way my tag system is behaving. Keep in my mind I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if I had setup Joplin wrong. If those two are the case, please let me know.

Standard behavior for tagging that I'm used to;

  • I would start typing a tag
  • Underneath my tag, a list of recommended/autocomplete tags appear
  • If I press spacebar, comma, or enter, the software/website would choose the word I typed.
  • If I click on any of the recommended/autocomplete tags, the software/website would choose the word that I clicked on.

However, the behavior in Joplin is different;

  • I would start typing a tag
  • Underneath my tag, a list of recommended/autocomplete tags appear
  • If I press enter, Joplin chooses the first highlighted recommended/autocomplete tag, not the word I typed.

Is this a bug? If it's not a bug, is there a way to change this behavior to the one above? Thanks for all the help you can give me on this matter.

Enter seems to act as a method of selecting the suggested tag rather than forcing what you have typed. You have to press the down arrow key until you highlight the entry Create "xxxx" in the suggestions where xxxx is what you have typed.

it's not very intuitive. no way to change that behavior?

Seems intuitive enough to me. It did not take me any time to work out how to use it and it does not require me to "click" on anything. I guess that Joplin's tag handling method is just not what you are used to doing.

I am in no way an expert on this but tagging seems to be quite a core feature. I guess that it could probably only be changed by forking the project and completely rewriting the tagging code.
