Any way to re-import Joplin portable notes that were removed by the backup?

HI all, first:

Joplin 2.2.4 rev daadc33 - portable
Syncing with another folder on my local machine
Windows 10 20h2 build 19042.1110

I set up Joplin portable to sync to another local folder - and in the process, it ended up removing all my notebooks and notes, while creating the backup .md files in the target location. Any idea why? Is there a way to re-import my notes?
