A Couple of Feature Request

I discovered Joplin about a year ago and used it for months. After a while, I realized that some features I wanted were not available. I researched other note apps and found Obsidian. It had some features I wanted and looked nice. I switched to obsidian. I used it for months. BUT web clipper was useless, difficult to use. Joplin's web clipper is very usefull so ı switched again Joplin and import all notes manually. BUT there are some features I would like to see in Joplin(Maybe there is, if so, I would appreciate it if you could let me know):

  1. Linking between notes.
  2. Preview links: When mouseover the link open small window or pop up
  3. Open links in tabs. When click the links (linking notes or external links) it open near the notes.

These are generally enough for me. Thanks.

For #1, to link a note you can either:

1. Right click the note in the note list > Copy markdown link > paste link in the note that you want to link this note to

or,

2. Hit shift + alt + l which will open a dialogue to search for a note and insert it as a link

For linking between notes I highly recommend the Quick Links plug-in. It behaves very much like Obisidian’s linking feature. When I learned about that plug-in, it was a game changer.

For #2, install the Note Link plugin and enable the Previewer: Enable checkbox.

For #3, install the Note Tabs plugin. Right-click a note link in the editor, then click Pin note to tabs. I don't know what you mean by external links opening near the notes.

I enabled the Previewer: Enable checkbox but I get an error:

''external links opening near the notes.'' : When I click on a link in a note, it opens in my browser. I want it to open in a new tab and in Joplin like Obsidian.

Thanks.

Regarding note tabs, "Pin note to tab" seems to pin the current note, not the one that you're right clicking on. But the workaround would be the following:

  1. Pin the current note

  2. Then, ctrl click the linked note to open it and it will open in a new "temporary" tab

Too much effort for just one or two features that could be added to the Joplin. Too much effort for ordinary user. :frowning:

Forgive me, looks like this has been the case since at least early this year per Plugin: Note Link System - Plugins - Joplin Forum. I would like it to be fixed, but it the plugin hasn’t been updated in years. I also mostly stick to the Markdown editor view anyhow.

As far as I know, links can’t be opened within Joplin, let alone within tabs within Joplin. I don’t know how much either feature is aligned with the spirit of Joplin.

While I see the benefit of in-app tabs opening web pages, I can do without them. If I need to open links on desktop, I typically have a browser window or two already open. As for mobile, opening a link in a browser or using my device’s app switcher works fine enough for me.

In case you currently require these features, consider using Obsidian with a compatible third-party web clipper like https://github.com/deathau/markdownload#obsidian-integration or https://github.com/DominikPieper/obsidian-ReadItLater instead. You could also consider (donating toward) development of either or both features.

I've added a pin to tabs option to my Context Utils plugin (requires the Note Tabs plugin to be installed)

it's also possible to open the selected note in a new window (this uses joplin's built in command to open in a new window)
