I read in the forum that the word count was part of the info icon at the top right corner of the editor about a year ago. now it is in the note statistics. However it would be way more useful it returns back to the info icon, or even better just appear in the editing bar just befroe the MD and WYSIWYG icons, or under the date, and gets updated as one types.
