I’m writing to report a devastating issue I experienced with the latest Joplin update — both on the Windows 11 desktop app and on my phone. As soon as I updated to the most recent version, all of my notes were instantly wiped out. Everything. Gone.

I’ve been using Joplin for over four years, and this update erased every single note I had — notes that were deeply important to me, both personally and professionally. This happened without warning, without any prompt, and without a backup being triggered (as far as I can tell). I trusted Joplin as a secure space for my data, and in a few seconds, it destroyed years of work and information.

I need to know if there’s any possible way to recover my data. If this is irreversible, it would be an unbelievable failure — and honestly, one I can't wrap my head around. Please advise urgently. I'm shocked, angry, and incredibly disappointed.

  • Restoring from an automatic backup: The Windows version of Joplin includes the backup plugin. By default, backups are stored in C:\Users\YourUserName\JoplinBackup. See the plugin's "restore" guide for details.
  • Manually recovering data from OneDrive: With the OneDrive sync target, notes deleted by a Joplin sync should be moved to the OneDrive recycle bin. If restoring from an automatic backup fails, it should be possible to restore using the data on OneDrive (though more difficult). I can try to provide instructions for restoring from the OneDrive recycle bin on request.

Just to add, I have tried simulating the scenario of many notes being deleted and synced to OneDrive and then restoring from the recycle bin. The existing Joplin profile won't recognise any notes which have been restored, however if you create a new profile and sync with OneDrive again after restoring all the .md in the OneDrive recycle bin, it should then reload those deleted notes into Joplin
