Re-order checkbox list items inside a note

Hi there, I am finding I’m missing a really important feature with my usage.

I currently make a lot of notes that are lists, especially lots of notes that are checkbox lists.

The problem is that when I make the lists, I don’t always group things in a way that make sense at a glance. So I find I am trying to re-order the items after the fact. This is a huge pain on Joplin as there’s no drag & drop handlers for the list items.

For example:

It would be good to be able to easily drag Item D above Item C. This is especially a problem on mobile where tapping single lines and cut&paste is not a great experience.

I find myself using this a lot when I’m grocery shopping and I need to group things based on the sections of the store (every store is slightly different as well).

I know in Google Keep you could easily drag & sort. I hope it won’t be too big of a lift for Joplin to implement.

You can use Joplin's Swap line down and Swap line up features for this.

Desktop:

  • Use Alt+Up to swap the current line up.
  • Use Alt+Down to swap the current line down.
  • If you want to use a different key combination for either shortcut, you can change it in Tools > Options > Keyboard Shortcuts.

Mobile:

  • While editing a note, swipe left on the bottom toolbar until the rightmost button (with the gears icon) is visible.
  • Tap that button, scroll down the list until you see Swap line down and Swap line up checkboxes.
  • Tap both checkboxes to make those buttons show in your toolbar.
  • Press the top-right X close button to return to the editor.
  • Swipe right until both swap buttons are visible, then tap them as needed.

Holy hell. I did not see this before. Thank you. It’s not quite as simple as a UI drag & drop, but this will do for now thank you so much @muzak :folded_hands:

I feel like I'm doing something wrong. I followed those steps and I'm not seeing those options. Maybe it's on f droid?

In your screenshot you should have two lines "swap line up" and "swap line down" but they are missing.

What version of Joplin Mobile are you running? 3.6.x?

3.6.2

I should have mentioned I'm running it sef-hosted using joplin/server:latest

Just deployed it the other day and wow what a treat!

3.6.2 is pretty old, please update your Joplin Mobile version, I have 3.6.20 from android google play store.

Awesome  but unrelated to your client side issue.

I get where you're coming from but sometimes functions that seem to logically be on the client side are actually built into the database itself. I'd be shocked if this didn't have to do with the server. Hopefully someone from the team weighs in or I'll start a new topic
