Questions about some needed features

Hello,

I use Joplin as a replacement for Evernote which I was heavily invested in and I have run into a few things that I frequently find as friction points and I'm just wondering if there is any reasonable chance these will be alleviated or is it just going to be the way it is?

#1 - Is there ever likely to be a mobile web clipper? On Mac it works great, but no iPhone clipper. I would want this for Safari.

#2 - Is it possible Joplin could ever show up in the share sheet for PDF files? It does for photos, but not for PDF or other files. This is on iPhone. It is currently cumbersome to send a PDF to a note. Example: I scan a document with Scanner Pro and I have to save it and then go into Joplin and add it rather than just sending the PDF from Scanner Pro to Joplin via the share sheet. This works for other notes apps but not for Joplin.

#3 - Is there any chance PDF's will ever show a preview in the rich text editor? I know it will in the markdown editor, but I use the RTE.

Any input is greatly appreciated. I think I read somewhere at some point that some of these are just not possible but I just wanted to ask here.

Thanks

Thank you for asking for a Mobile Web Clipper.

I'm on Android and I have an alternative app called markdownr that converts HTML weblinks into the markdown code but it's not ideal or smooth.

Until Joplin releases a Web Clipper for Android what I've been doing mainly is clipping to obsidian and then moving the data into Joplin because obsidian has a very nice Android Web Clipper that works in the Firefox web browser.

Hello,

Thanks for the information…I think I’ve heard about markdownr and I have thought about using bear or obsidian as a clipper and then moving the note.

Do you think that a webclipper will ever come to Joplin mobile? I just don’t want to use workarounds forever.

I don't know. I'm quite disappointed right now. I've asked for the Web Clipper in the past I've even directly requested it of the developer but I never heard back from him.

Here is my solution that I use everyday that might work for you. It requires that you have the obsidian app installed but you don't have to use it you just have to have it set up to be able to use so that it will work with the obsidian Web Clipper.

The Firefox browser on Android supports extensions and obsidian has an extension for Firefox on android. I asked the Joplin developer if he would be willing to do something for Firefox on android but no response.

I frequently read Google news and sometimes want to clip a news article and put it into Joplin so this is my procedure.

In the Google News app I click the share button and choose to share it to Firefox where the obsidian Web Clipper is.

Once Firefox is running with the article in it I tap the menu button and then extension and then the obsidian Web Clipper. Once the obsidian Web Clipper is running it grabs the text for advanced it nicely into a document with a header.

This process also copies that new markdown document to the clipboard.

Then I open Joplin and paste from the clipboard to wherever I want the article to go.

I actually just installed an app called Macrodroid. According to Google Gemini this program is capable of automating this process for me I just need to learn how to do it.

I asked Gemini if it was capable of copying text from one app and then launching a second app having it converted into markdown and then paste it into a third app which will be Joplin. it claims that it will be able to do that if I can figure out how.

What I'm doing is a pain in the ass but I've gotten used to it.

I'm very curious about macrodroid and seeing if I am skilled enough to create a macro that can move text from one app manipulate in a second and then paste it into a third.

Hopefully this will stir up some interest and a kind developer will create a Firefox extension for Android Joplin. It can be an independent app too I don't care.

I'm also going to see if I can get the source code for the Firefox extension and convert it with AI into Joplin. Another option is to see if AI can create an extension based on the Web Clipper for desktop browsers.

It's an open wound.

Thank you for your input and all the info!

This seems like such a major shortcoming to me! I’ve used a webclipper for years and for the last while that I’ve been using Joplin I’ve been saving links on iOS until I can be at my computer and clip the articles. I want to clip the pictures too because sometimes that part is important. The Joplin clipper for safari on macOS works awesome. I just wish it would work on iOS too.

One last thing.

I did a few minutes of research for you regarding iOS and markdown conversion here are my notes. Seems that there are both dedicated apps as well as browser extensions available.

Html to MD ios web clipping.

Oh, I made some progress very quickly regarding the conversion of the desktop Joplin web Clipper browser extension for Firefox so that it can work on the mobile Firefox. I'm going to give it a whirl.

Hey, here's a tracker page for this feature

In short, the feature is desired but might be complicated to maintain as of now

As a workaround, you can put the webpage in reader mode in the browser and copy and paste all into Joplin, now that Joplin Mobile allows for rich text editing. You have to copy the weblink address separately if you want that, but you can always Google for the title if you need to find the page later. I know this is just a workaround if you mainly do your clipping on the Mac and only occasionally need to save things on the phone.

Thank you for this info. I will look into it!

Thank you
