If somebody out there maintains the Joplin Web Clipper it would be great if it could be enhanced to be compatible with Android browsers like Firefox which supports extensions.
On Android Firefox supports extensions and it would be nice to be able to use the Joplin Web Clipper to take Snippets of pages and unfortunately the Joplin Web Clipper is designed to only work with the desktop version of Joplin and will not work in Android Firefox.
As a temporary workaround I am using Firefox with the obsidian Web Clipper which is supported on Android Firefox.
Then, I have to go into obsidian and copy everything into Joplin.
Any chance that this could be a feature in a future Web Clipper?
I don't think it's the Web Clipper that is the problem but rather that there is no clipping functionality in the mobile Joplin app. It would need to be added there, and I'm sure this isn't a quick and simple task.
The Joplin app is fine. The problem is no one wrote an extension for the mobile version of Firefox.
All that is needed is for firefox android to have an extension to load.
When I am in Android Firefox and I go to extensions and then look for additional extensions the joplin Web Clipper isn't there. It's only available in the desktop version of Firefox .
The procedure that I go through is to open a web page like a news article in Firefox and then click on the three dots to open the menu and then select extensions and then obsidian is there and I click on that and it scans the web page and puts it into obsidian. It's not doing anything with the obsidian app other than pasting the Final Markdown file into the app. I'd like to see the same thing happen in Joplin but the Joplin Web Clipper needs to be added to the extensions list at Firefox.
When you're in Firefox and you go to extensions and say that you want to add more extensions Joplin is not in the list. There's no way to pick the Web Clipper and add it to Firefox and that is what I think needs to happen because that's how obsidian works.
I'm on my mobile now so I'll paste this note and then take a screen capture of what I'm talking about and add it to this note so you can see what I'm referring to.
Yeah, the issue is that even if you could install the extension (which is probably possible by downloading the XPI file directly), it would do nothing unless support for Web clipping was added to the Joplin app first.
I guess I'll be doing my manual import and transfer method for now.
With the help of chat GPT I found a program called markdownr. You paste the URL of any website into the app and press one button and it converts everything to mark down format that you can import into Joplin.
It was written by somebody for the sole purpose of importing web pages into notes apps that use markdown.
It’s possible to add/use the Obsidian Web Clipper extension in the Android Firefox browser without installing the Obsidian app. In the Obsidian Web Clipper Settings | Advanced, set the Save behavior to Copy to clipboard. When you’re on a page you want to clip, open the Firefox Extensions, select Obsidian Web Clipper, Copy to clipboard, then paste the clip into Joplin.
It would be great to have a Joplin Web Clipper for Android, but this is a reasonable workaround.
Thanks for this idea. I found the setting that you are referring to. It would be nice to be given a choice as to which way I want to go rather than picking one or the other but this is better than nothing.
Another workaround: now with the new rich text editor, you can simply copy all content from a web page and paste it into a Joplin note. I tried it and images will be converted as local attachments. This method doesn’t display a link to the original article, but if you want to find the source later, it’s just a Google search away.
