Plugin: AI Writing Toolkit V 1.1

Elevate Your Notes: AI Writing Toolkit for Joplin Version 1.1 is Here!

I am thrilled to announce the release of Version 1.1 of the AI Writing Toolkit.

A Huge Thank You!

Before we dive into the new features, I want to take a moment to say thank you. Since I launched the initial version, hundreds of users have downloaded the plugin.

What is the AI Writing Toolkit?

For those who are new to the plugin, the AI Writing Toolkit is designed to bridge the gap between your Joplin notes and the power of Large Language Models (LLMs). It’s not just about "chatting" with an AI; it’s about having a sophisticated editor right inside your notebook.

The toolkit allows you to:

  • Refine your prose: Improve grammar, tone, and clarity instantly.
  • Summarize & Expand: Turn bullet points into paragraphs or condense long meetings into bite-sized summaries.
  • Brainstorming: Generate ideas, outlines, and titles without leaving your markdown editor.
  • Custom Prompts: Use the power of AI tailored specifically to your unique writing style and needs.
  • PDF Formatter Print your notes as a PDF with headers, footers, and a title page.

What’s New in Version 1.1?

We believe that the best software is built through collaboration. After the initial launch, a user reached out regarding how the PDF formatter handled code blocks.

Version 1.1 is the result!

The Headline Feature: Enhanced Code Block Formatting

Many of our users are developers, researchers, and technical writers who live in code blocks. Previously, the plugin's PDF formatting of code was ugly.

In this update, we have overhauled the way the plugin handles and formats code blocks. Whether you are asking the AI to refactor a Python script or document a CSS snippet, the output will now be cleaner, more consistent, and perfectly formatted in the PDFs produced by the plugin.

Help Us Build the Future of the Toolkit

This update is a testament to the fact that user feedback directly shapes this plugin. If there is a feature you’re dying to see, or a workflow that feels a bit clunky, I want to hear about it.

Do you have a suggestion for the next version? Found a bug? Just want to share how you’re using the toolkit?

Your input is invaluable as we continue to make the AI Writing Toolkit the best companion for Joplin users.

This is quite a useful plugin. But I see the name is ai writers toolkit + pdf publishing and it feels like it shuold be seperated into two separate plugins. Is there a reason it’s one?

feature request: one thing I think would be useful would be for a copy button to copy the output without the need to writing it to a note first

Can you expand what this means a bit? You can already insert into a note or replace a note. Do you want a button to load the AI response into the APP copy/paste buffer? What is the use case for this? Does it replace one of the existing buttons?

P.S. Happy to add this, just want to understand better.

a button that says copy to clipboard. maybe I want to paste it outside of joplin, or control exactly where to insert it into another note. technically you have insert, replace, append. with a clipboard, it would be quite easy to chose to paste the clipboard contents anywhere myself, wether it be one note, or multiple notes, or an external app.

My particular use-case was that I wanted to do a replace, but I didn’t want to replace the current content without seeing a diff, and the window was too small, so I was opening it in another app. Speaking of which, being able to diff the output may also be useful.

Feature Request: "Copy to Clipboard" Button for All Outputs

  • Problem: Users are forced to use automated actions (Insert, Replace, Append) that may not fit their exact workflow. This is especially problematic for large blocks of text, sensitive operations, or when the target isn't the current note (e.g., another app).

  • Solution: Add a standard "Copy to Clipboard" button alongside the existing "Insert", "Replace", and "Append" actions for every generated output.

  • Benefit: This simple addition empowers the user to:

    • Paste the output into an external application (email, document, etc.).

    • Paste it into a different note than the one currently open.

    • Paste it into multiple notes.

    • Hold it temporarily while they prepare the destination.

    • Manually review and edit the text before integrating it into their note, effectively creating their own "diff" process.

Thank you for the detailed explanation.

I’m busy for the rest of this week, but I will try to add this by the end of next week. I will also think about how to best support more buttons since the layout is becoming a bit crowded.

Your requested feature is in V1.2 recently uploaded to the Joplin plugin repository. I verified this morning it is available as an "update" from within Joplin.

Thanks again for the feedback.

Joe,

Thanks for the question. I have struggled with this question.

I address your question in the release notes for version 1.2.

During the day I provide consulting services to tech startups and venture capital firms. I take all of my notes in Joplin. After a meeting I often need to recap my notes and produce a formal report. I created this plugin to have the tools I needed to do this.

Here is the formal answer I gave in the release notes.

Why an Integrated Toolkit?

One question we often get is why we’ve combined AI assistance and PDF publishing into a single plugin rather than offering two separate ones.

Our goal is to provide a truly integrated writing environment. For researchers, technical writers, and knowledge workers, the writing process doesn't end when the first draft is finished. It ends when that draft is polished, formatted, and ready to share.

By offering a single, unified plugin, we can:

  • Streamline the Workflow: Use AI to brainstorm and refine your ideas, then instantly transition to professional PDF formatting—all without switching contexts or managing multiple plugins.
  • One-Stop Documentation: If your goal is to turn your Joplin notes into professional-grade documentation, we want you to have everything you need in one place.
  • Consistent Experience: A single set of commands, a unified interface, and a cohesive design philosophy make the entire process more efficient.

it works well, thank you!

Useful info for potential users:

You get X number of API requests in, then you have to pay for OpenAI in order to use this plugin.

This is true. Nothing anyone can do about that.

The AI companies want to make money, so they have become more aggressive about limiting free access.
