Notes Not Backed Up Or Transferred [iOS]

Operating system

iOS

Joplin version

13.0.7

What issue do you have?

Hello - I upgraded to a new iphone the other day, and noticed that during the migration from old iphone to new iphone, the notes in Joplin were not transferred. Is this expected? Is there anything that can be done on the Joplin side of things to ensure the notes are copied when migrating to a new iphone? I am also curious if the local iphone backups backup Joplin notes? I have been running local iphone backups using Apple's backup tool in macos, but now I'm not sure if the notes are being backed up at all? Thank you for any input.

I have already run the export/import of the notes from old iphone to new iphone.

I think so - and that's in line with other iOS apps which have their data 'in the cloud'. The recommended method is re-download from remote target although that might take some time.

Can't talk about iTunes backups, but all of Joplin's data is definitely backed up into iCloud. I learned this the hard way when my storage quota shrunk by 1.6 GB all of a sudden :upside_down_face:

And that was in the days before "Advanced Data Protection", i.e. E2EE for iCloud. IMHO iOS users should beware of the default setting "back up all apps" and toggle Joplin off manually, unless they have ADP activated. Not your use case, though: Local backups are a good thing as they usually don't pose any privacy risks.

I think the default behavior of Joplin should be to transfer notes to the new phone (without having to use icloud), and also have the notes backed up when performing a local backup (itunes and backup on macos). However, I'm not sure how much control app developers have over this backup/restore behavior?

Having to revert to running exports periodically on ios is not ideal (assuming the notes are not backed up when running a local backup, which I'm assuming they are not).

I'd be very surprised if it wasn't included in an iTunes backup (or other backup software). Local backup solutions are usually able to cover more kinds of data than iCloud does, not less of it.

I think it's just as you suggested: It's got to do with the way iOS handles backup and restore operations, and there's little that Joplin devs can do in that respect.

I just tested a backup and restore of 1 test note using the iphone backup/restore method built in to macos. The note was not successfully restored, which leads me to believe that there is no way to backup Joplin notebooks/notes unless it is manually exported from within the app, and saved off device somewhere.
I would suspect that the itunes backup also does not backup the notes.
