Moving Evernote Handwritten Sketches to Joplin

Operating system

macOS

Joplin version

3.4.12

What issue do you have?

Hi, I'm migrating from Evernote to Joplin. I've watched all the videos on sketches in Joplin, so it seems like you can create handwritten sketches although I haven't tried it yet. Haven’t got so far as to install it on a tablet yet. I've also imported a bunch of handwritten notes into Joplin but I can't figure out how to edit them in Joplin. They just appear as .png images. How does this work?

Hi,

I also migrated from Evernote.

Short answer: there’s no direct way to edit Evernote handwritten drawings inside Joplin the way you could in Evernote—but there are a few solid workarounds depending on what you want.

As you noticed upon import Joplin converted the file into a PNG.

Even after you leave Evernote you still have your login account unless you deleted it. You can always log in on one computer at a time to your old Evernote account edit the handwritten drawing and then save it out again. That is exactly what I do.

How to edit drawing imported to Joplin from Evernote

Thanks for that. Looks like migration is going to more painful than I thought. Thankfully, in my case I’ve only got 20 or so notes with sketches, so I think I’ll just take note of which ones have sketches and convert them to Joplin native drawings over time when I’m in the mood or as a need arises.

GOOD NEWS

I think I found a solution for you that is workable.

  1. Ii exported a sketch from Evernote into an .enex file and imported into Joplin.
  2. The picture sketch exists in Joplin as a .PNG file. Right click on the sketch and choose copy path to clipboard.
  3. Open paint.net or Krita or whatever program you want to use to edit the sketch.
  4. In that app do a file open and paste the path you copied from Joplin and put it in the file open box and then open it or you can drag the sketch into the app. It's located in the resources folder in the Joplin profile directory.
  5. Edit the sketch.
  6. In the other app do a copy of the image to the clipboard and paste it into Joplin to replace the old note with a picture in it.

Apparently you can also copy from Joplin the image to the clipboard and paste it into another app for editing and then paste it back in again.

I tried krita which is open source and multiplatform and paint.net and they both worked well.

Give it a try and let me know if it looks good to you.

Awesome, I'll give a whirl some time. Might not be soon, I'm juggling many things and need to get off Evernote by the end of the year, so I'll come back between now and Octoberish when Evernote expires.

Ok. Thank you for asking this question. As I mentioned I also moved from Evernote and had no idea how to do this either until I researched it for you.

By the way, where did you find the link you provided?

Looks like an AI generated response.

The response was created by chat GPT and the hyperlink goes to my Joplin cloud. I paid Joplin about $4 a month to have them host my files on their server. You either need to pay to use their server or install your own server in order to be able to publish notes to the web like I did.

There are other note-taking apps capable of doing the same thing such as notesnook but I can't attach files there so I get the most functionality by having my files hosted on the Joplin cloud system.
