Joplin unable to find files(pictures, etc)

Operating system

Linux

Joplin version

3.3.12

Sync target

What issue do you have?

All my saved documents are missing from Joplin when I migrated computers. I have tried to sync locally, re syncing, and have tried to move all relevant documents to the proper folders(not positive if I did that correctly) but no luck.

How did you migrate the Joplin data? This issue would indicate the "resources" folder is either missing or empty

Do you have a JEX backup of your data? If you still have access to your old computer, you should have daily JEX backups there, check the builtin Backup plugin.

Once you have a proper JEX backup, start from scratch from it, see How to fix synchronisation issues and start over

I do have a resources folder.

I believe I tried to get Joplin to sync with google drive like a did with my windows pc, but I could not get google drive to work in my distro, so I manually moved the files over.

Thank you for the help.

Hi,

I don't know if you have a working copy of your database on the original PC or not? If you do what you want to do to be successful is create a backup using the export feature from the old system and then importing it into the new system. Don't mess with the files manually. Let the software do the export and import of your data.

You can also access Google Drive on Linux using rclone software.

I do still have my old PC. But the problem is that the back up is old. I have been using joplin for a while on my new pc dealing with the errors. I am assuming that the old back up will wipe out all my new work, and I don’t want to do that. Am I just screwed? Or is there another way to fix this?

Hi,

Well, I need to give it a little bit of thought and perhaps someone else with expertise can chime in but there might be a way for you to effectively merge your good working backup from the old computer with your new data.

I just need to lay it out in my brain for a few hours and see what the procedure might be to follow in order to successfully restore the old data and merge it with the new data.

Importing data does not overwrite existing data so it might be possible for you to take a backup of your new computer that has all the newer data just to be safe. Reset the app to nothing and begin by importing the old working system so you have everything that you have been missing and then import into that the new expert that you did of the new system and it might have a system with all of the old and new data merge together.

Can anyone review this and be certain one way or the other?

It sounds like your current installation is to some degree broken so you would want to start over with the old and then bring in the new. I just need to think on it for a little bit.
