About a week ago I started using Joplin, importing all my Evernote notes.
Then I made my local Joplin sync via WebDAV with an external location (in a folder .../Joplin/.resource) and set the sync-interval to 1 hour.
This morning, after I had added some notes to Joplin, I noticed the Synchronize-'button' in the lower left of the screen. I decided to click it, so the two new notes would immediately be synced externally.
Or so I thought.
Joplin has since been syncing for hours and has by now created some 15.000 'external items'. When I checked on the external location, I see that all resources are created again, this time directly in the folder .../Joplin.
So now I have all resources twice in the external location, in two separate folders.
I cannot find where the sync folder is specified, so that's my first question: how can I find that location?
Second question: how come it (apparently) is different from the location where initially all resources were synced?
For example, I'm syncing to the file system and I also have .resources in the Joplin home directory and in the external folder. I never synced with WebDAV though, I'm not sure where the target folder is. And with the number 15,000 it might or might not be normal , I had a few thousand notes and 8,000 sync items a few years ago, now it's probably more than 10k, it depends how many notes you have.
Hi @banan314, thanks for taking time to respond.
However, I'm not sure if you suggested an answer to my question... What I have is all my resources backed up externally in the Joplin home and in Joplin/.resources. I cannot believe this is proper behaviour, but am looking how to solve this?
Hi @AUitje , unfortunately I believe it is proper behavior. It's not a backup, backups tend to be additionally compressed. Joplin home is the primary storage place. It's where the application reaches for the resources when rendering your notes (it loads it into memory at the startup). When you paste an image it's saved in Joplin home as well. The other resources folder is a part of the synced directory. As far as I understand, it's only coincidental that's a part of the same storage disk. It could be anywhere else, including another machine, so I don't see any better way than to store all resources as is there.
I have another thought though. Maybe the sync folder is inside the Joplin home directory? That would cause recursion problems and I suppose the memory would swell forever.
Sorry I didn't answer your questions because I didn't quite understand them, I hoped it's an XY problem and I could clarify them a bit, but let's give another go then.

I think it's up to WebDAV configuration where the actual sync folder is, all you configure in Joplin is WebDAV URL.
Second question: how come it (apparently) is different from the location where initially all resources were synced?
What do you mean by location where initially all resources were synced? Do you mean the Joplin home primary storage place? Then it's not a location where the resources are synced. Otherwise, I don't know what location you refer to.
I will return to your answers, @banan314 - but it gets weirder (at least, I don't understand a thing of what is happening).
Just now, I started Joplin again, not having changed a thing since yesterday. It immediately started syncing again, and in the message in the left hand lower corner, I see that it is fetching thousands of items again... Nothing has changed! What is happening here?
Maybe I need to read a good description of how Joplin's sync works, because I don't understand :-/
Been looking for myself a bit further. Still don't understand what's happening, but will stop here. I found that there is an important distinction between sync and backup. Since I want backup, I wlll stop syncing for now entirely.
I'm looking forward to watching you return to them
I see that it is fetching thousands of items again... Nothing has changed!
It might not be proper behavior. Tell us if it repeats tomorrow. Sometimes I see the same thing, and I also don't understand why. Syncing is the Joplin's Achilles' hill.

well, if you don't need to change your notes from your multiple devices, and you don't need to access the most recent version of the notes on another device, then you don't need the sync. Backup is only a copy of your data from which you can restore the previous state when your device gets burned or stolen, or you accidentally erase all your files.
