Joplin new design, feedback is welcome! (20 June Update - Version 4 is ready!)

I think the "fullscreen" button just removes them both. But it doesn't look like theres a way to do one OR the other (as you wrote).

What about the menu bar? Will that be pushed into a general settings screen?

Love it! I think the left pane could be condensed more, there is a bit too much wasted space on either side of the note names, but the design is simpler and cleaner than the current one. Fully support!

Actually we'll most likely keep the top bar and window chrome.

I’ve been thinking a lot about how to decouple layout from theme for another project, and would be happy to provide my 2 cents if there is a good forum for that.

Any idea on how to do that would be welcome. I've been cleaning up the Joplin themes a bit recently so that they can be used on both the desktop and mobile app.

Yes the date won't be in the note list for now. We'd have first to implement support for multiple note list views, so that will be for another time.

Where will the “in note” search box appear?

Good question actually. Maybe below the tag bar then?

Those are the Close/Minimize/Maximize buttons on macOS. The designers went for a chromeless design, which perhaps is a good idea, but we won't implement this for now.

The menu bar doesn't appear on the design, but will be there as usual.

I think the “fullscreen” button just removes them both. But it doesn’t look like theres a way to do one OR the other (as you wrote).

I wonder if the functionality to toggle the sidebar and note list should be moved to the menu actually. I've always felt they are too prominent even though they are not more important than say the Config screen or the sort options, and these don't have dedicated buttons on the toolbar.

I think it's more common to use these buttons actually. For example today I used Joplin side by side with a pdf reader and toggled both of them off so that I could have a larger writing area. I imagine this is a pretty common use case, and it's definitely handy to have the buttons. Although having a keypress to toggle them is probably just as good.

Well, but in that case I have the app in fullscreen. I just want to toggle those 2 components.

@laurent The new design looks fantastic, a great modern take. I’d be interested to see what the dark theme would look like in this design scheme as well.

Also, the “split editor” is certainly great when doing detailed MD editing/formatting where I want everything perfect, but I would LOVE to see the new UI take in a more modern WYSIWYG approach like Nextcloud took with Nextcloud Text: https://github.com/nextcloud/text. Typing the dash and seeing it convert to the bullet, etc, so much more slick and user friendly when it comes to scribbling a note.

Thanks!

edit I should be clear, I know I can turn off code view and it’s “close” but missing things like strike-through and the conversion of standard MD typings (dash, asterisks, etc). And none of that applies to the Android app which it would be nice in as well.

The buttons are maybe too prominent, but they don't have to be. e.g. if there was a top bar or something, one could just double-click that and the sidebar/note list is collapsed. I'm not a UI designer, but I'm sure there are options to make this work. e.g. even if it was double-click on the separator.
For me the buttons are useful. I would miss them, but I could live with it, if there were shortcuts for both actions.

I much prefer the tags at the bottom myself. I’m all in favour of this!

I’d second this - I use Joplin in a similar way and really like those buttons at top left for toggling the view of the folders and notes. Other than that, I think the new design looks great - thank you for all your amazing work on this!

I second this. Maybe a small button on the separator (like in Overleaf)?

Thanks everyone for your feedback so far. Version 2 is now ready and your feedback again would be most welcome! For info, this is done by a designer from Upwork that we’ve hired using the mentor stipend we got from Google for GSoC.

The note title field somehow is missing from this design, so I’ve asked to put it back, but otherwise there are some nice improvements I think.

Yep, I've noticed that right away.

I like it, except the WYSIWYG | Markdown. IMO they are too prominent. I'm not sue how often people switch between editors.
I don't think there have to be buttons at all for that. But I'm biased, because in my case it's 0 times - or never. Maybe a poll is required?

I liked this better:

Maybe we need an explanation what these buttons are supposed to do:

Also, I have noticed that the info button, which was the reason for the toolbar re-design is once again burried next to other icons.

I still do not see the back/forward button, nor the In: notebook button.

PLEASE! No poll! I still have nightmares thinking about the poll for the Joplin icon! :slightly_smiling_face:

Let's just let the BDFL do his thing...

(BTW, I do agree with you about the WYSIWYG | Markdown buttons.)

Agree. I collapse/expand the notebook and note list a whole lot more than switching editors. Is the top right button supposed to do that?

A fullscreen mode? Like a “distraction free” type mode? Is that what you are hinting at? You can achieve it by collapsing things, but a toggle would be super nice.

WSIWYG | Markdown

Looks nice, but too big.

No note label at the top? Hm. I am not sure what I think about that. It’s more or less a “filename” in concept. The markdown itself often has a different Title, so to speak. I would have to chew on that. If there is no title, that [WYSIWYG | Markdown] bit could probably stay as is, but still seems a bit … bold.
