I just noticed something, that might be interesting.
With the current Version of joplin (1.0.218) i have the problem, that the GUI freezes instantly on startup. I can’t work with joplin.
System is openSUSE Leap 15.1 with Kernel 4.12 and wayland.
If i login with a X.org.1.20.3 session, i have no problems with joplin.
Should i open a new thread?
Wayland causes issues with some apps, like freezing or refusing to start up.
Switching to X.Org mostly solves these problems, as has been explained by @bedwardly-down

What you are facing is almost certainly an Electron issue.
It's nice that you pointed it out, so now its documented in the forum
