I think the question was how to change the default vertical dimensions of the pdf viewer. so, media-pdf probably refers to that.

Thanks again Steve, that's what I assumed. That code works under Linux but it doesn't want to 'play the game' under Windows 11 for me. I'll keep mucking around...
The stylesheet solution above by @Erdbeerquark works great. On MacOS I opened the Joplin > Settings menu item, then clicked into Appearance and then Show Advanced Settings. The Custom stylesheet for rendered Markdown button/link brings up my editor with the userstyle.css file. I added the recommended CSS rules to that file, saved it, and restarted Joplin. Voila, PDF attachments display in a larger window, showing a whole page at a time.
