I currently have the backup plugin doing a backup every 2 hours; and keeping 10 on my harddisc. But everytime I messed up a note so far I have used the history feature to revert to the previous version; I have never actually installed a complete backup. In addition, my harddisc is backed up regularly, so I have a large number of Joplin backup sets.
I'm wondering what a best practice is for this plugin & would welcome some suggestions to frequency & number of kept sets.

You are correct that history is going to be your first restoration for simple things like notes.
The backup is more of an overall snapshot of your notes and probably isn't going to be an efficient way to just revert a history change unless you have history reduced to a small amount of time or didn't have the note history enabled.
I like to keep mine set to 1 per day and to keep 7 days worth of backups. I haven't really had the need to use them but it's good to have. My thought is that it's more of a crap hit the fan situation if I purged things and I shouldn't have situation on Joplin or the sync destination is hosed and corrupted all my synced devices I really wouldn't need to dive into the backup.
Since you are backing up your hard drive then you are probably fine since I was going to recommend that you have you Joplin backup be saved somewhere externally.
