What issue do you have?

I use Joplin Portable (3.6.15) on Windows 11 to collect all the technical information about my work. I copy and paste a lot of it directly from Evernote, and I type a lot directly.
I enabled syncing with OneDrive; after the first few syncs, I see [Not Syncing] at the top of every note.
To avoid losing my work, today I tried registering the sync with Dropbox, but after a few syncs, I still see [Not Syncing].
At the bottom left, I now see Completed: 06/22/2026 7:14 PM (2s)
In the cloud, you can't see what has been synced and what hasn't because there's no folder name, only files with alphanumeric names.
I can't risk losing my work. How can I be sure everything is OK?
Thanks for your help and advice.

There's "Not Syncing" text in Joplin. Could you please provide a screenshot of the problem?

That looks like the actual note content? If you click inside, can you change the text?

that text is the visual sync indicator feature from the "extra markdown editor settings" plugin

OK, thanks for the clarification, but the question remains. How can I check if the sync has actually been performed?
The message says no; perhaps it's not working properly, or it's working, but the sync hasn't been performed.

Why doesn't the note have a clear name in Dropbox or OneDrive? If I want to restore just one note, how can I know which one it is if the names are hexadecimal strings?

1. Joplin has a standard sync indicator on the bottom of the notebook sidebar. If its actively syncing, you'll see an animation. When its done, it will show a checkbox:

sync

If you see a checkbox and no error message, that indicates the last sync worked without issue.

2. the extra markdown editor settings plugin just adds a similar indicator feature inside the note itself (e.g. so you could see sync status even if you have the sidebar hidden).

"Not Syncing" just means that joplin isn't actively syncing changes at that moment

3. Joplin stores its notes in a sqlite database. The files on the sync target (dropbox) are only used for sync and aren't meant to be interacted with directly.

If you wanted to restore a deleted note, you'd want to restore it from the Trash folder in Joplin. Or if you want to see older revisions of a note, you'd want to do so from the Note properties dialog in joplin.
