Problems Updating Joplin 2.4.9. to 3.2.11 in Linux

Operating system

Joplin version

3.2.11

Desktop version info

Joplin 2.4.9 (prod, linux)

Sync target

What issue do you have?

I currently have Joplin 2.4.9 (prod, linux) installed on my desktop. I have downloaded Joplin-3.2.11.deb and tried installing it over the top of my old version of Joplin (with the old version closed). The installation appears to complete successfully. But when I open Joplin again the version remains 2.4.9. How can I install the new version?

Thank you for your kind help.

Joplin has only had a deb package since version 3.2.5 so I guess that you are trying to install a deb package over an AppImage...

You can use the install / update script to update the v2.4.9 AppImage to the the latest release version.

I guess that you now have two versions of Joplin installed on your system but the program menu icon you use for the app points to the AppImage.

EDIT:

I just tried what you did on a VM and ended up with two entries for Joplin; The deb ("Joplin") and the existing AppImage - which Linux Mint renamed to "Joplin (env)".

Thank you for your kind reply! You identified the problem. My question is how to I delete the old AppImage?

I did download Joplin-3.2.11.AppImage but when I try to execute it I get an error:
Sorry this did not work
no file_to_app results to show.

So being unable to install the updated AppImage I need to delete the old installation so I can install the updated deb package. Please advise how to delete the old AppImage installation.

The file sits wherever you put it and runs when clicked. If you initially used the script to install the AppImage it is located at ~/.joplin so you just delete that folder and then delete the icon that points to the AppImage.

Having the AppImage on the disk should not stop the deb from being installed. As you can see in my previous post I had the AppImage and the deb package both installed and working (not at the same time!).

Thank you for you kind help!!
