Options to Adjust Image Resolution

Options to Adjust Image Resolution

1. General Function of the Feature

Enable users to adjust the resolution of:

  1. A single image

  2. All images within a specific note

  3. All images across an entire notebook

  4. All images stored in the Joplin profile (global option)

2. Reasons for the Feature

  • High-resolution images can significantly increase storage usage and slow down performance, especially when syncing or loading notes. This issue is amplified on mobile devices, where storage and processing resources are more limited.

  • Notes created via web clipping are often filled with multiple high-resolution images. These notes tend to consume large amounts of storage unnecessarily.

  • In most cases, such high resolution is not required — a reduced image size or resolution is sufficient for readability and context.

  • Allowing users to manage image resolution would help:

    • Optimize storage space (especially limited on mobile devices)

    • Improve performance

    • Make syncing faster and more reliable

    • Keep the overall note database lightweight

3. Example of how it could Function

  • Right-click on an inserted image in the note editor

  • Choose a new menu option: “Image Properties” or “Adjust Resolution”

  • Options within the dialog:

    • Set resolution (e.g., 25%, 50%, 75%, original)

    • Set a fixed width/height (with aspect ratio lock)

    • Option to preview changes before applying

  • Allow batch resolution changes for:

    • All images in a note

    • All images in a notebook

    • All images globally

Being able to resize images by a percentage would definitely be nice

I have a 4k monitor, so if I take a screenshot and put it into a note, I have to scale the image to exactly 50% so that the image isn't huge relative to other content in the note (and isn't blurry from resizing to something other than an exact percentage), this isn't easy to do even with the rich text editor's image resize because you can only resize the image by dragging.

EDIT: Destructive vs Non-destructive resizing would need to be considered (maybe an option for both?). Advantages of destructive resizing would be reduced file size (as noted in OPs post), whereas non-destructive resizing (like when you resize with rich text editor) allows to to change size for display purposes without losing any quality/resolution.

I desperately would like a feature/ability/plugin/anything that would auto-size oversized images to ‘fit’ within the window. I am regularly dealing with this kind of annoyance:
