It seems that when I have an md file which is not managed as a Joplin note, there is no way to open it with Joplin to either view or edit.
This would be convenient, though.

You can download and install a program called Marktext and it is a markdown file editor that you can register with your computer so it will be the default for opening files with a markdown extension.
