Using the latest Onenote I couldn’t get the current stable release to import no matter what advice I tried. I’ve tried several times over the past years and just go back to OneNote. I periodically look at the Joplin/github page to see if anything has changed. I saw a post from one of the devs stating there were changes in 3.5x.
I tried it and it mostly works!
Is it safe to start using Joplin now with the betas and my sync’d Onenote content? I read the explanation that the betas are OK to use but the sync with Onenote is obviously dramatically changed/improved. I tried to downgrade one client to 3.4x after importing Onenote and it immediately crashes upon loading after complaining about the note database format being unrecognized.
Some observations:
- There were “errors” during import. The warning dialog didn’t explain what they were. I spent an hour going through each and every note and found 3 that weren’t imported. They were easy to cut and paste over but it would have been great if the actual notes were described.
- I expected formatting changes and was pleasantly surprised that although they did happen, they were too bad. That said, a lot of my notes have had double spacing applied and I’m not familiar enough with Joplin to figure out how to change spacing yet.
- Many/most? embedded images seem to have moved over (although SVGs are displayed HUGE) but I have several notes with small PDFs. They appear to have migrated. They are noted and appear as a hyperlink, but almost always placed behind the note title?
- I am now using/syncing between Windows/Linux and iOS. I don’t know how the Apple test pilot program (required to get the iOS app) will work as it describes the beta expiring in 90 day cycles? Is my data/syncing safe? When a new stable release is available will I be able to switch over?
