OCR does it really work?

I just started using Joplin. The OCR feature does not work. I tried to upload photos w/ clear text shown, screenshots from the internet, etc, and search for the content but nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong?

OCR seems to work for me in Joplin 2.14.22 (Linux/Ubuntu 24.04). I'm testing with this PNG file and searching for "pre-releases".

Here are a few things that could be happening:

  • It can take some time for OCR to process all resources.
  • OCR needs to be manually enabled in settings > general > "Enable optical character recognition (OCR)".
  • Not all image formats are supported. For example, Joplin should OCR PNGs, JPEGs, and PDFs, but not GIFs or SVGs.

Joplin has OCR capabilities? Is it only for the desktop version?

OCR indexing and search was one of the best Evernote features before it all went to h*ll.

I have only jpg and png atachments but ocr doesn't work. I've tried press "Clear Cache and re-downloaded language" button. Joplin was restarted but after that nothing happens.OCR is not working.

It depends on your images too. If no text can be recognised, then no ocr data will be available. For further support anyway we'd need to see the logs.

Edit: closing as it's not a feature request. Please open a support ticket and provide the needed information
