Migrating from Evernote, some help please

I've been looking at alternatives to Evernote for the last month or so and keep getting it with formatting issues, which I have yet to resolve and its frustrating.

I'm not enjoying the use of markdown with how I take notes, I just want a WYSIWYG rich text editor. Kind of like an open source local direct replacement to Evernote. If Joplin isn't for me that fine, but any suggestions would be cool.

My main grip is indentations in the RTE, I cannot tab for simple note taking, I know its a markdown thing (which is crazy in my mind). Can anyone help with any plugins or settings that ether switches Joplin between formats MD and HTML, or enabling tab like formatting.

With the mass exodus of Evernote, I'm sure more users are going to be hit with the same issues. I know a few with the exact problem. So any help would be appreicated.

I believe that some work has been done on making tabs work in the RTE. You could try the pre-release v3.1.3 as the changelog states, "Improved: Rich Text Editor: Add eight spaces when pressing tab". This is detailed in GitHub issue #10880.

Pre-releases can be found here.

v3.1.x is not due to become a full release until the first week of October 2024 but there is nothing to stop you trying it to see if what is being developed will work for you.

EDIT: Do not install v3.1.3 over your current install if your current version is v3.0.2 or below.

@personalizedrefriger (one of the devs) opened the issue a few days ago when they responded to your previous post, then wrote the code and then got it merged into Joplin.

Hi,

I'm transitioning from Evernote myself here is a nice backup export program that will export all of your Evernote notebooks all at once for you so you don't have to do it manually. Then you can import each notebook individually well they'll all come in at once.

There is also a specific joplin plug-in that you want loaded so it will restore note to note links I'll post the name of it later.

So my export is from evernote and enex, not using the util you provided. I get problems like this with the import:

Its also adding a \ before *, which isn't something I had in evernote, and the RTE is messed up so I cannot trust it. Do you get problem like that in your suggested backup util?

I've also copy and pasted the top line and still get the parse error. To note, I don't get this in Obsidian, when testing that application.

I have alot of snippets of commands, scripts and code, which is all wrong on import or a stright copy and paste. I know I can convert these to a code block, but there single lines and I have alot so, I really don't want to rewrite 180 odd notes.

Hi,

I've been an Evernote paid customer for many years and have decided to switch to Joplin and have begun using Joplin full-time.

This export backup program on GitHub works by exporting the data and importing it into an SQL light database and you do not need to backup your entire Evernote all at once if it is taking a long time you can stop it and run it again when you go to sleep and let it run overnight it will pick up where it left off and you can run it one last time before you go live on joplin. It will always update the database with anything that is either new or changed since the last time the app was run.

After all of the data gets imported into this database there is a command you run at the command line that will export all of the data into individual notebooks in a single file folder. After you have that file folder you go into Joplin and do a file import and point it to the folder that is really created and contains all of your notebooks. This is how I did my conversion from Evernote to Joplin.

You can run this program on Evernote at any time and Export to notebooks in a folder and then create a new Joplin profile and import those notebooks into that new profile and the data will be completely separate from your existing import and you will see whether or not it works to your satisfaction and if it does that could be your new default notebook.

Let us know what you do and what happens.

Does obsidian export into a Joplin compatible format? You can always run the utility from GitHub at any time and import to a new profile and see if it works better or worse.
