Making a Telephone Call Log

Hello. Thank you for making Joplin.

Question: I would like to be able to make a "traditional call log" like people have used for decades. For example, I could hack one together in Excel manually and it might be similar to what I'm seeking here.

The only way I've found to do this with Joplin is by using tables. The problem: It's really not great. The tables just aren't greatly done. They appear more like "something in development."

Is there by any chance a template anyone has been working on? Or some other more-enterprise method of taking call log notes?

Example in what I'm looking for:
[Date/Time] [Person I called] [Notes]

(and like 5 more fields)

issues currently: Date/Time should auto-add in date format, tables should be easy to select and tab-through (tabbing doesn't work well at all), rows and columns should be fixed or easily resizable, I shouldn't delete an entire table if I clicked back by accident, etc. Imagine: A program for call notes, not "something I hacked together in Joplin."

Other features you could add: Allowing relations between calls (like a database). Wow would that be nice.

Thank you.

For Markdown tables on desktop, check if these table plugins fit your needs:

The Joplin Plugins website has other table plugins, but I think one of the above should suit your needs.

For timestamps, press Ctrl+Alt+T to paste them using the Date format and Time format set in Tools > Options > General. For other dates and times, try the Slash Commands plugin.

Thanks! I'll check them out.

You're welcome. I do use other programs for tables with long cell contents and/or more than a few columns. Managing tables with rows longer than the editor can become messy.

I'm not sure how to implement the EZ Table or others even though I installed the plugins. I read one of them will let me "tab" from cell to cell, which does not currently work in "regular tables." Do you find this too?

Here's what I would do in your shoes:

  1. Disable or delete the other table plugins I've mentioned, if applicable
  2. Install the MultiMarkdown Table Tools plugin if you haven't already done so
  3. Click the Create table toolbar button with the table icon
  4. Click the Create table dialog button after adjusting rows, columns, and header settings
  5. Populate a table cell
  6. Press Tab to tab through and auto-resize the table

These steps work on my machine. If they don't work for you, please let us know.

I installed the MultiMarkdown Table Tools. In the tools menu I see a Create New Table but it's grayed out. I did see this other Create new table but it doesn't work either.

I also installed the Freehand drawing and it's fine but I don't do free hand stuff. Mainly need to paste screenshots, add arrows (which I don't see that option), add text boxes.

Markdown plugins aren't compatible with the Rich Text editor shown in your screenshot, hence the plugin's Table tools > Create a table menu item being disabled. You can learn more about the Rich Text editor and its limitations here: About the Rich Text editor | Joplin

I don't use Rich Text. Unless you're open to Markdown, someone else using Rich Text might have workarounds for your needs. Same goes for screenshots and diagramming.

Thanks. I also can't create a table also I guess for the same reason
