With the help of a French government agency we’ve been working on a server that transcribes both audio and visual media into text. Whether it’s handwriting recognition (HTR), optical character recognition (OCR), or speech-to-text conversion, this server will take some media and provide clean, accurate text. It will be fully open source and can be integrated with Joplin Server (and will be part of Joplin Cloud).
We’ve got most of the functionality nailed down, but we're still looking for a good name. Something related to transcription, to conversion or maybe even something to do with Scott Joplin, not too sure what would be best.
Any help with this would be much appreciated, I'd be keen to hear any ideas or suggestions!
JModulation / Joplin Modulation Service, for that blend of CS/EE radio stuff for encoding information alongside the musical term for shifting/rewriting tones.
STING ("Serveur de Transcription Intelligente Numérique Générative" or "Système de Traitement et Interprétation Numérique pour la Génération textuelle")
I feel that it needs to contain the word "Joplin" to tie it in with the Joplin ecosystem. Also it needs to be something that does not generate many search false positives. So whilst ideas such as "Joplin Syncopation" are quite interesting (this was also suggested for what became Joplin Server) I am sure there would be far more hits relating to Scott Joplin ragtime syncopation than the transcription software. Furthermore with this example "Syncopation" does not really give any idea as to what the software does (it certainly doesn't syncopate!) and you would probably never be able to protect that name.
I suppose what I am saying is it may be better to resist the urge to be "clever" with the naming at the expense of being as simple and clear as possible, whilst being unique enough to be able to protect if necessary.
I know that it is rather boring but "Joplin Transcription Server" (or just "Joplin Transcribe") is plenty good enough for me!
As much as this is designed for Joplin, would the server actually be exclusive to Joplin? It sounds like the kind of tool that could be useful generically.
I agree with your points, though I think aligning to the school of practical namies it makes sense to have "Server", "Service", "Daemon" or something explicit in that vein if going for a practical name, since Joplin Transcribe for example seems like an alternative Joplin application in the same way you might differentiate Joplin Mobile from Joplin Desktop rather than something that enhances all of them.
To @dpoulton and @james-carroll's points, I think the inclusion of "Joplin" in the name depends on whether the server is exclusive to Joplin or not. That said, I'm struggling to brainstorm compelling names without "Joplin":
I'm not sure that names related to Joplin like Syncopation and Entertainer would strongly signify this server's functionality.
While I think Ragtime is a nice name, it could be better for more AI-integrated software (with how RAG can stand for retrieval-augmented generation). However, I found a somewhat similar software to Joplin using that name: RagTime.
I think Joplin Composer sounds nice and ties into transcription. However, searching for it generates too many false positives to recommend it.
In my opinion, the following names that were already suggested would work better:
While I get how Joplin Media Server can tie into other services besides transcription, "media server" makes me think of unrelated software like Plex and Jellyfin. Search results don't touch upon transcription much.
Search results for Joplin Transcription Server have this thread showing up first with more generic results afterward. Autocompletions largely reference server-related terms (same for Joplin Media Server).
Search results for Joplin Transcribe show several links about Joplin transcription atop the results. Autocompletions largely referencing media types.
If I had to pick a name for a Joplin-exclusive server now, I would pick Joplin Transcribe even though it's for a server (though Joplin Cloud also relies on servers). The name also adheres to the mostly two-word paradigm Joplin software uses (besides Joplin Web Clipper), without being too long (like Joplin Transcription Server).
Looking forward to hearing out more suggestions. Surely there is some name that checks off most if not all the necessary boxes.
Turpin
Tom Turpin was a pioneering ragtime composer and a key figure in the genre’s development. He was a contemporary of Scott Joplin and played a significant role in fostering the ragtime scene in St. Louis, Missouri.
