What issue do you have?

I’m a new user so please bear with me…
I’ve set the font size in Settings -> Appearance to 22pts. However, whenever I create a note it always displays in 12pt and I can’t find any way of altering this to make them display as 22pt - or 18/20pt whatever. I cannot find any stationary folder but there must be a config file somewhere that would allow a simple modification such that all new notes display as whatever point size I wish. Possibly this is in: .config/joplin desktop
Unfortunately I’m not well up in coding and am unable to modify these files to create a default font size for both html and markdown. This would apply to new notes in Joplin and possibly any imported notes from Evernote/One Note or such.
Can anyone help me out please? Many thanks.

There is a font size for both viewer and editor in the settings. Make sure you set both

Thanks for the reply.
Sadly the only reference to font size I can find is the one under Settings → Appearance → Editor font size. Tried everywhere else but I must be missing something :smiley:

One other point. The ability to ‘toggle editor’. Is this between editing in HTML versus Markdown. Are either of these likely to be deprecated in Joplin? I only ask because Markdown is becoming increasingly popular for text editors, so in the long run the devs may feel it better to standardise on that.

Thanks again for the help.

Oh, you’re right! The viewer size option only exists on the mobile app. It may be possible to change it with custom css, but somehow I can’t get it to work for that particular part of the UI :frowning:.

So if you want to make viewer and editor text the same size as each other but a larger font, you’ll have to use View > Zoom in to that, which will make text across the entire app larger

Bummer :relieved_face: It would make sense if an update allowed the font to be altered in both edit and display for the desktop apps. Alternatively allow both edit and display to be in the same window.

I’m no good at doing CSS files so this is a plea for someone to knock up a couple - html and Markdown- that will display body text as 18 pt Helvetica. Actually anywhere between 18 and 22pt would be OK if the text uses fractions of a default size.

Presumably these would go in: /config/joplin-desktop Not sure if permission would allow writing to that but I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it. Any Joplin updates and I would have to renew the custom CSS sheets since the update would retrun the folder to default.

Thanks again for the help

Here’s the .css pair for the theme that I created. (I created both a light and dark version) You can edit the “font-size” entries in the userstyle.css file to your liking.

@willysjeepman Thanks for that.

@ScottAB24 Looks like you just need to add this to userstyle.css, setting the font size you want:

body {
	font-size: 32px;
}

It seems the reason I couldn’t get it to work before is because you have to restart Joplin after making the change, even if you opened userstyle.css via the Joplin ui. The change will apply to both the viewer and the rich text editor.

Please note that rendered checkboxes in the note viewer will not be resized with the text, but they will in the rich text editor.

Thanks to you both. I’ll check out your suggestions tomorrow :grinning_face:

I’ve been having a look at the suggestions….

@mrjo118. You’re right that appending: body { etc to the userstyle file does the job nicely.

However @willysjeepman. I tried using the CSS files you posted, For some reason they wouldn’t open in BBEdit - I’m on a Mac - but after getting round that, the ‘light versions’ worked nicely. I really liked the coloured sidebar, a little lighter would have been nice but I’m really splitting hairs here. The slight yellow tint to the note area is very welcome. Staring at a bright white screen for any length of time does my head in.

So thanks to you both once again for some very helpful suggestions.

Re: the couloured sidebar. Where is the line of code referring to the tint? It isn’t immediately obvious, at least to me, but I can play around with different tints once I know where I’m looking.

RE: Updates. When updating Joplin does it over write these css files? At present I’ve renamed the userstyle_light file to plain userstyle.css. I’m guessing these will be overwritten so need to be replaced each time.

Re: Synchronisation. Probably another topic, but I see Joplin writes its stuff to ~/Library/Application Support. Would it be OK with a symlink and the ‘real’ folder placed in a Sync service folder. EG Sync.com Or, would it work vice versa?

No, it doesn’t overwrite those files upon upgrade. They exist to allow you to customize your experience.
