It appears that 3.5.5 updates the internal profile from v48 to v49. That means that once this version is run and it has converted your data files they will no longer work with v3.5.4, v3.4.12 or any other earlier version of Joplin. In other words you cannot easily revert if you find you are having problems with the pre-release.

Just for the information of those who like to try pre-releases on their "live" data

FYI the v49 upgrade is a database migration added in PR #13054, and the changes included there on their own are not going to prevent you using older Joplin clients on other devices (I have not tested if it would be an issue to downgrade on the same device), which is important because there is not currently a 3.5 pre-release available for mobile.

I may be wrong, but my understanding is that a profile upgrade relates to where you need to upgrade all clients to a minimum version, as the sync target has been upgraded. Presumably a sync target upgrade is not currently required for Joplin 3.5, otherwise this would be causing issues for early adopters of the desktop pre-release for users that use mobile clients as well.

No it is not anything to do with the sync target. It is the "profile" of the database located locally on your machine. It will not affect any other machine. It means that if I update my Joplin desktop version to 3.5.5 on my computer it will also upgrade my local database to v49. From then on that local database will only work with a client that can handle v49 or above. You cannot just install an older version and use that. If you try it you will get an error along the lines of,

Unknown profile version. Most likely this is an old version of Joplin,
while the profile was created by a newer version.
Please upgrade Joplin at https://joplinapp.org and try again.
Joplin version: 3.4.12
Profile version: 49
Expected version: 48

Any notes /data that client sends to a sync target and delivered to other devices are not affected by this.

Profile updates only really become an issue if you wish to "downgrade" a client. You can only go as far back as the last database profile change without having to delete your local data folder and re-download everything again from the sync server.

Feature suggestion: In WYSYWIG, after clicking the three horizontal dots to see extended/hidden parts of the formatting toolbar, and then using one of the formatting options, the extended toolbar auto-hides. Right now, you have to click again to hide it.
