Automatic conversion of images on import - HEIF -> AVIF

Hi all,

Wonder if someone with development skills may be able to assist?

With all of the recent data privacy news, we're keen to export notes from Apple Notes and import to Joplin to move users over.

The problem is that Apple Notes tends to use the native image format (HEIF) when storing images. This isn't compatible with the Chromium underlying framework which Joplin users meaning that the majority of images are not viewable when in notes imported from an Apple Notes export.

Would someone be able to add a plugin, or the ability natively, to automatically convert images (at original resolution, bit depth etc) from HEIF to AVIF when importing notes to Joplin?

Many Thanks

It's not exactly what you're looking for, but in the meantime, you can set your iOS camera to save photos in JPEG format by changing the camera settings. While JPEG isn't as efficient as AVIF, it's widely compatible and avoids the issues that you mentioned in your notes.

Honestly, I think it would be nice to have some kind of automatic image conversion to a widely-compatible format. It's always a pain to deal with HEIF (HEIC) images sent from Apple devices, and while more advanced users will be able to convert them easily using external tools, this isn't the case for the average user, who simply won't understand why their photos don't work .

Thanks both; unfortunately the notes (circa 400 of them) already exist in HEIF format in Apple Notes which is a problem
