quit using the Cloud, it is a mess with trying to Sync up.
I prefer Joplin because it puts Images where they belong, not at the end of the entire Note.
I sync to a local File on my PC, it is near Instantaneous, and never fails.

Sorry to hear you’ve been having such challenges.
Relating my own experience, I’ve been using Joplin for about 4 1/2 years now, with no major problems I can think of.
Mostly notes with occasional photos and perhaps a file attachment.
I started with encryption via Dropbox and have continued as it works well for me.
I’ve never had any disasters, yes the usual conflict of notes which are handled quite well with conflict detection and the conflict plug-in, and in order to reduce those conflicts I tend to be quite aware of when I have edited something on multiple devices (computer, phone and tablet).
And of course using the backup plug-in, just in case…
I've never had syncing issues either. I have used two different ways since:
I'm guessing you're not using Android? I know that once I upgrade my phone I'll no longer be able to access Joplin on my mobile. That Prospect really sucks. I'm using the filsystem sync which has been broken for over a year now.
Hi joeschmoe. Actually I am using Android. Indeed that's the platform where sync problems first began.
Not sure what you mean by upgrade. Within Android? Or from/to iOS?
I meant buy a new phone (I rarely downgrade when I buy a new phone). But scerwin, I was responding to t0dd on this one, so the question was directed at him. sorry for the confusion. I think it's not obvious in this forum.
i'm not quite in the same boat, but I know as soon as I get a new phone, joplin will be unusable for me. I've been donating the project, but when it became evident there was no solution coming for android, I stopped.
what platform? android?
The truth is filesystem sync was only meant to be a for testing and dev. I made it available to everybody, a bit reluctantly, at the demand of users but I've never liked it because I can't make it as reliable as I'd liked.
Any reason you don't try an alternative sync method?
Hi Laurent. Wow, very interesting. Thanks for your candid forthrightness, it's much appreciated.
Can you elaborate on what you mean by alternative sync method? Do you mean e.g. Dropbox (and not Joplin Cloud)? Or something else entirely?
For me, no alternatives are possible until I can rescue my Joplin database. Currently it's inaccessible to both the Android and Windows Joplin apps. I really have no idea how to start over except Revo-uninstalling and then reimporting all 150 of my Evernote notebooks. Is there an easier way?
Andbeen, to be honest that sounds like a fun and creative solution but not a practical one for most people. I'm glad it works for you.
Hi manuerwin. Very interesting, thanks.
My feeling is that I just don't want to have to be aware of how or when I edit something on multiple devices. That's the job of the software. Right?
Hi mvilain. Why did you say that storing files isn't Joplin's intended use? Why not? I'm not being argumentative, just trying to understand your reasoning. Thanks.
Yep, Android, but I also had problems with the Windows app. Admittedly, my data was messy, but encryption instantly fixed the syncing. I also solved other problems by turning off note history. The app Is rock solid now.
Good to know, pizzafrog. Do you have any insight into why encryption would affect synchronization? I know nothing more about this than my common sense but cannot see any connection.
From what I understand, Joplin doesn't try to check the validity of a note's coding when encrypted. Most of the errors I was getting stemmed from a defective note in Joplin's eyes. Encryption closes Joplin's eyes, and it just syncs. I read this somewhere, and it makes sense-ish to me, but as to why they don't close Joplin's eyes without encryption, well, I don't understand that part.
Very interesting! If I ever manage to retrieve my database from Joplin Cloud, I will give encryption a try. Thanks.
primarily because I don't want to expose my private files on another server. was happier to leave the files unencrypted and dealing with it on my own. I suppose I can encrypt everything and try using something like onedrive or dropbox. It sounds like this is what you advise?
I also sync to Dropbox with notes encrypted. I have Joplin on Windows, Linux and Android. Been using Joplin for probably 4-5 years, with no significant issues. I just discovered the Windows app doesn't have an easy way to report total size of notes, so I exported all and the JEX file size is only 48K. Which is strange, because I have another JEX file from 9/7/2020 that is 125K, and my usage has grown substantially since then. I looked on Dropbox website, and my Joplin folder is 2.3 MB. So, I guess I'm a low-volume notetaker. I don't attach any large binary files to my notes.
The only "problem" I've encountered is sync conflicts. I never use more than one platform at a time, and I try to be careful to always do a sync when I switch from one to another. Still, I occasionally - maybe once every 4-6 months - end up with conflicts. Annoying, but I guess every multi-platform notes app will encounter this issue sooner or later.
In case it helps, I've got ~1200 notes and ~2800 resources (mostly images, some files) with a full JEX export of ~800MB (database.sqlite ~35MB).
Hi guy-rouillier. From your description it sounds to me like you indeed do have sync problems (as opposed to "problems"). Conflicts are a symptom of sync problems, after all. And the fact that you are tiptoeing around Joplin by using only one platform at a time is exactly the thing I am complaining about (ok, one of several things).
I really don't want to be defending Evernote here but I have never encountered these problems with it. I leave different platforms open, running and syncing simultaneously, and it all just works.
Finally, please note that your database is quite small. Your experience could be different if it were a thousand times larger.
