Desktop image editor inside Joplin?

Hello all,
I'm searching a way to do basic editing on images (crop, rotate...). Actually I still need to use external editors.
What about a plugin to do basic image editing on desktop?
TIA

Hi,

Take a look at pinta editing software for editing images. You can resize crop and add text arrows Boxes Etc.

On windows for cropping adding text arrows boxes and blurring areas that are sensitive I like a simple program called sharex.

Sharex can also take screenshots and capture web pages.

Another good app is picpick. You can take screenshot capture entire website pages and add text resize crop rotate Etc.

Pinta and picpick are both similar to Microsoft Paint but more.

Hi LeoW,
my fault: I wrote a wrong subject.
In fact I didn't mentioned I would like to edit images directly in Joplin, without using an external editor. I will update the subject, if possible.
Although I am a graphic designer by profession, I would like to make the changes directly in Joplin without switching to an external image editor.

No problem.

I am a convert from Evernote and Evernote does have in their paid plan a built in image editor where you can do some basic things but it's not as sophisticated as a desktop app. It's significantly more than any other note-taking app I've used. I'm just not willing to spend fortunate Evernote wants now.

There's only so much editing you can do in markdown.

You cannot crop, but you can rotate an image and draw on it if you use the insert drawing function (available on Joplin desktop and mobile) and then insert an image into the canvas for the drawing.

EDIT: Actually there is a way to crop an image with the drawing function, but it’s not particularly intuitive. There is an auto resize checkbox in one of the menu bar options. If you disable that option, you can set the desired dimensions for the cropped area, then resize the image to have only the area you wish to keep, within the boundary. This would non destructive though, so the original uncropped image would still be available.

If you right-click the rendered image one of the context menu items is "Open" which will open the image in your preferred editor. Do your edits and save and Joplin is updated. You can't get much easier than that and it keeps Joplin as a note-taking application rather than being a photo editor that also takes notes. :slight_smile:

Let the graphics editing be done by people who specialize in graphics editing.

I agree keep the software focused on being a Notes app.

I use a few different apps but snagit is my default.

this could be useful.
But the image opens on the default image editor (set by system).
It would be nice to have an option like "Open with..." on the right click menu to let the user choose among his image editors.

It does take one extra mouse click but selecting “Reveal file in folder” allows you to do an “Open with” on the file. I agree the “Open with” would be useful in Joplin. Rather than waiting while some massive image editor opens you could open with a speedy viewer if you just wanted to see the image full size.

Wouldn’t revealing the file in the folder, editing it, saving it back under the same name (date & size would get modified), mess with Joplin’s database? AFAIK it is not as simple as that, otherwise we could easily do a mass resize and other useful actions without additional plugins such as Attaché.

I often want to perform basic updates to images and happy to do them outside of Joplin such as

  • Crop (especially poorly scanned documents via Joplin mobile);
  • Resize (true resize, not just presentation resize, to reduce the space taken up by images;
  • Various annotations, labels, etc.

Thanks.

I have done as you suggested, the image opens in the default editor, I can crop it and save it but the Joplin note is not updated, it still shows the unedited image.

However, if I "Reveal the file in folder" and open the image directly it is the cropped image.

Any idea why the image in the Joplin note is not updated?

Update;

I did the edit on my PC, the note on my Android phone has changed but the one on the PC is still unedited.

Did you perhaps move Joplin off that note while editing the image? Joplin watches the file for external changes until you move off the note so if you move off and then save the new image Joplin might be confused. Just a guess here as I've never seen that problem and I edit images all the time. It's easier than deleting the old and adding a new one but I always make sure I save the edited one before leaving the note.

Good suggestion but pretty sure I didn't move off the image.

However, having left the PC for a while I have come back and checked the note with the image and it has now changed to be the cropped one.

I had imported a lot of notes from OneNote before I cropped the image and Joplin was synching the new notes to the cloud so maybe I just needed to wait a while for it to catch up.

Thanks for your continued help with this issue, it does appear that it has solved itself.
